Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you ask my advice regarding the following alternative that presents itself to you: You can accept a position as a physician and be very occupied earning your livelihood*, no longer having the time necessary for your scientific research; or you can endeavor to organize your life so that you continue this research, in which you appear to have great chances of success.

It is clear that the second option is preferable. Indeed, one should not take into account only the days and weeks ahead, but above all the future, over a span of several years. And it is preferable to live in a constrained manner for a short period, provided that one subsequently obtains, through this, moral satisfaction and also an improvement in one's material situation for many years.

Nevertheless, it is clear that this can only be so to the extent that it will be possible for you to actually earn your livelihood, albeit in a constrained manner, during this period, while devoting your ardor and the majority of your time to scientific research. If this is not the case, your research will be compromised by the necessity of providing for your needs, and it will be difficult to continue.

It is surely unnecessary to remind you that the true happiness — not only moral but also physical — of a Jewish man and a Jewish woman is conditioned by a way of life that conforms to the teachings of our holy Torah, Torah of life. The stronger this bond, the more one improves one's chances of perfecting one's life, materially and spiritually. And nothing stands in the way of one's will.

במענה על מכתבו, בו שואל חוות דעתי באשר שתי דרכים לפניו, אם לקבל משרה בתור רופא ויהי' טרוד בעניני פרנסתו מבלי זמן פנוי כדי הצורך לחקירות מדעיות, או להשתדל לסדר חייו באופן שיוכל להתקדם בחקירות מדעיות שכפי הנראה יש לו סיכויים טובים להצלחה בזה.

הנה מובן שהדרך השני טובה יותר כיון שעל האדם להביא בחשבון לא רק את השבועות והחדשים הקרובים אלא והעיקר עתידו בשנים הבאות, וכדאי צמצום בחיים לזמן קצר, בשביל לקבל סיפוק נפשי וגם שיפור המצב הגשמי לשנים ארוכות, אבל מובן גם כן שבמה דברים אמורים אם יהי' בידו לסדר אופן פרנסתו על כל פנים בצמצום גם אם יקדיש רוב מרצו וחלק חשוב מזמנו לחקירות מדעיות, כי בלאו הכי הרי טרדת הפרנסה מבלבלת בעת החקירה וקשה להתקדם בזה.

בטח למותר לעוררו אשר כל איש ואשה הישראלים, אשרם האמיתי ולא רק ברוחניות אלא גם בגשמיות, תלוי בהנהגתם בחייהם מתאים להוראת תורתנו הק' תורת חיים, וככל שהקשר בזה הדוק יותר מגדילים גם כן האפשרית לשיפור החיים בגשם וברוח, ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון.
