may Hashem grant you long life,

Greetings and blessings,

It is with pleasure that I learned of your campaign, which begins this week, in order to raise the financial means necessary for the Lubavitch Yeshivah of Montreal. I hereby extend my warm greetings to all and to each one in particular — to those who are taking part in this annual drive. I send you my sincere wishes that Hashem grant you considerable success.

Every campaign, especially one organized on behalf of an institution of paramount importance such as the Lubavitch Yeshivah of Montreal, invites reflection on what this institution represents — not only for its hundreds of students, whom Hashem will multiply, but also for the Jewry of Montreal and of Canada as a whole.

Even previously, the Yeshivah was not merely a place of study where one learns Torah*, but also a pedagogical institution in which the student absorbs the spirit of the Torah. However, in our era, its role is even more paramount, for it enables the student not only to acquire knowledge of Torah and Judaism, but also to fill himself with the light of the Torah of life, of "the candle (which) is a Mitzvah* and the Torah (which) is a light" — with a spirit of self-sacrifice* and responsibility toward the moral heritage of our people.

Such is the profound character of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch, whose students are distinguished by the fact that, leaving the four walls of its precincts, they know they must be "candles to illuminate" — to spread the light of Torah and Mitzvos* around them, in their daily existence.

Great is the merit of the directors, of those who take action, and of all who participate in the campaign of the Lubavitch Yeshivah of Montreal. It is not enough to help the Yeshivah, to give it the means to survive. In addition, it must be able to grow and develop, for such are the characteristics of that which lives.

I hope that each person will act with the self-sacrifice and energy that are necessary. Success will then be assured, and it will bring blessing and prosperity to each one and to the members of his family, in all material and spiritual needs.
