11 Iyar* 5715

Brooklyn

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and carries out a divine mission, Rav Eliyahu Leib (Rav E. L. Rivkin),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 5 Iyar* (in which Rav Rivkin wrote that several teachers felt nothing should be said about the date of 5 Iyar, while others proposed to devote a few words to it and indicate that on this day, seven years ago, the Arab nations attacked the Jews, who were saved by a miracle of Hashem; see letter no. 3404). You know the saying of the Baal Shem Tov*, which we have heard many times from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, that everything one sees or hears can — and therefore must — convey a lesson for the service of Hashem. How much more so when it concerns an event affecting many Jews, especially since in this instance Hashem "placed the many in the hands of the few" (as was the case on Chanukah*), in a miraculous manner.

Greater strength to serve Hashem must therefore flow from all of this. And one should not at all be distressed by the fact that some have a different conception of the events and seek to impose it under the pretext that they are the majority. The event itself proves their error and shows that numerical superiority is not at all decisive.

In fact, those who adopt a different attitude also know that this is so. Nevertheless, they do not combat their evil inclination as they should, and they are therefore under its sway. This is in addition to their attitude, which is an incredible display of ingratitude (toward the miracle of Hashem).

An analogy will help to understand this. A great and powerful monarch demonstrates his profound love for the most simple and ordinary man. Leaving the place of his glory, he goes toward him with all his ministers and then brings him into the royal palace, as explained in chapter 46 of the Tanya*.

Is it conceivable that this most humble man would tell the king that the palace belongs to him personally, that he will therefore do as he pleases in it, and that he will begin by expelling the king in every way possible — that is, by adopting a coarse attitude and systematically opposing his will? You must understand what I mean.

You tell me that matzah shemurah* (see letter no. 3386) was distributed to the parents of students in your school, and I am pleased. This was surely done in all the schools of the network (Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak Lubavitch in the Holy Land).

May Hashem grant that you always convey good tidings of your communal activities and your personal concerns.

With my blessing regarding all the above,

M. Schneerson
