To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yerachmiel (Rav Y. Blumenfeld; see letter no. 3719),

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos* Tazria-Metzora, in which you describe the classes you give to your friends and, above all, to a group of students. I congratulate you. It is no doubt unnecessary to explain to you at length how important all of this is. You know the statement of our Sages* in Tractate Bava Metzia* 85a, that as fundamental as it may be to teach Torah* to the son of one's friend, and even more so to one's own son, the pinnacle of elevation consists in separating the grain from the chaff.

It is surely unnecessary to remind you of the need to ensure that your teaching in certain schools not be interpreted as an endorsement of those schools and their conceptions. I have already written all of this to several Chassidim* (see, for example, letters no. 3403 and 3440), even though it is self-evident. The precautions to be taken depend on the conditions of the place and the schools. Not all locations are the same.

In general, your classes should not appear in the school's program, and its administration should not intervene regarding your teaching. It is said that "salvation comes through the multitude of counselors," and you will therefore consult those who are on the ground.

You propose that the girls also participate in your lecture on Chassidus*, on condition that they sit in separate rows. You presumably mean that they will be in another part of the room, with a partition in the middle.

There is no reason to publicize all of this in those terms or to make it an official position, a principle, for there will always be people claiming to be scrupulous — not necessarily sincerely — who will invoke the words of our Sages* that "one who teaches Torah* to his friend's daughter... (is as though he teaches her foolishness)." Nevertheless, one should strive for this to be the actual practice. Once again, it must not appear that by acting in this way, you are granting your approval to that school.

Already in Riga*, my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, established classes in the study of Chassidus* for girls (see letter no. 2375). He wrote letters to them on this subject, and with time, this initiative bore fruit and was even of great significance.

Indeed, the woman is the mistress of the home (and of the atmosphere that reigns within it). Before that, she must become engaged (and therefore do so in a manner consistent with Chassidus*). And in fact, the law of the Torah* specifies that this must indeed be so, as stated in the Shulchan Aruch*, Laws of Torah Study, as well as in the Alter Rebbe's* version of these laws, at the end of chapter 1. Women are obligated in such study, which leads to feeling the fear of Hashem, submission, and putting into practice everything pertaining to the Torah* and the mitzvos* in the best way, on a daily basis.

All of this is well known, and one can verify empirically every day that this is so. It is therefore unnecessary to say more.

On this subject, it is very important that a branch or group of the Chabad* Women's Association was founded in your city (Bnei Brak*; see letter no. 3605). You will ensure that this group develops in the appropriate manner. Some time ago, I wrote to several branches of the Chabad* Women's Association to recall that those who join need not necessarily be convinced from the outset or have already adopted the most impeccable Chabad* conduct.

It is understood that the women wishing to join this association already have a favorable attitude toward Chabad*. There is therefore reason to believe that, for most of them, this good intention will be followed by a concrete effect within a relatively short time, so that they may in turn guide others.

With my blessing for success in all the above,

M. Schneerson
