Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 24 Iyar*, in which you tell me that you are being taken to court — presumably for not having responded to a document you should have received by mail but did not actually receive. In such a case, one must consult with a lawyer who knows the local customs. You should also point out that you recently emigrated from a country where mail delivery is not perfect. Since your arrival in the Holy Land, you have been at the Yeshivah*, where you pursue your studies with diligence. You therefore do not know all these regulations and, consequently, there is no reason to suspect you of what does not correspond to reality at all — namely, of having deliberately decided not to respond. Hashem will suggest to you the appropriate arguments to present.

The Chabad* Chassidim* know that one must be careful in this matter — that is, regarding the use of postal services. Thus, the Tzemach Tzedek*, whose merit protects us, when he would entrust a letter to a traveler or to someone going to a certain place, would nevertheless submit the equivalent of the postage fees, according to the rate then in effect, to the postal administration. And we know the extent to which one must strive to emulate the example of our holy masters.

With peace of mind, you will therefore redouble your diligence and zeal in the study of the revealed dimension of Torah*, its hidden teachings, and in the most careful practice of mitzvos*.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ד אייר, בו כותב על שתובעים אותו למשפט. והרי בכגון דא צריך להתייעץ עם עורך דין היודע החוקים על אתר, וגם לעורר שימת לבבם שכיון שהוא עלה מזמן לא כביר ממדינה בם עניני בית הדואר אינם מפורסמים כל כך, וגם לאחר שעלה לאה"ק ת"ו נמצא הוא בכותלי הישיבה ושוקד ומתמיד כל כך, וגם לאחר שעלה לאה"ק ת"ו נמצא הו בכותלי הישיבה ושוקד ומתמיד בלימודו, הנה מובן ופשוט שאין הוא בקי בענינים כאלו ופשיטא שאין לחושדו במה שאין בו (והשי"ת יתן לו הרעיון הנכון איך לייעצו).

והרי כבר ידוע בין חסידי חב"ד הזהירות בענינים כאלו, עד שכ"ק אדמו"ר הצמח צדק זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע כשהי' מוסר מכתב על ידי נוסכ או מהלך ממקום אחד לחבירו, הי' בבת אחת עם זה מכניס למשרד המתאים שוה של הוצאת הבי דואר שבימיו של מכתב כזה, והרי ידוע עד כמה מדקדקים ללכת בדרכים שהורו להם רבותינו נשיאנו הק'. ומתוך מנוחת הנפש יוסיף בהתמדה ושקידה בלימוד נגלה דאורייתא וסתים דאורייתא וקיום המצות בהידור.
