To the young man Yosef Melamed*,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 2 Sivan*, in which you tell me that an association of Yeshivah* students of Yemenite origin is currently being formed, and you outline its objectives. You ask me whether you should participate in it.

In such a case, one must wait until the true nature of this association and its activities are revealed. All of this does not always depend on the will of the founders, especially since that will, in this instance, is not clearly expressed.

Our Sages* say that "one cannot know what is in another's heart." How much more so in the Holy Land. One must therefore refrain from affiliating with a group or association before having observed its activities for a certain period of time. Only at the end of that period can one determine its nature and who directs it, the situation then becoming sufficiently clear.

במענה על מכתבו מב' סיון, בו כותב אשר מקימים אגוד תלמידי הישיבות התימנים ותכלית האגוד, וכו', ושואל אם להצטרף לזה.

הנה בכגון דא, יש לחכות עד שיתברר בטוב פרצוף האגוד ועניניו, אשר לא תמיד תלוי אפילו ברצון של המיסדים ובפרט שגם רצון זה אינו ברור, וכמרז"ל אין אדם יודע מה בלבו של חבירו, ובפרט באה"ק ת"ו יש להזהר ביותר מלהשתייך לאיזה ארגון ואגוד עד שיראו משך זמן בפעולותיו שרק אז אפשר לדעת מהותו מי הם הבעלי דיעה כו' - כאשר רואים במוחש ברור ענינם.
