To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Avraham Tzvi HaKohen* (of Yerushalayim*; see letter no. 3458),

Greetings and blessings,

After a long silence, I have received your letter of 4 Sivan*. Your son Asher Lemel HaKohen is beginning to put on Tefillin* (see letter no. 3458). May Hashem grant that this be at a good and fruitful time, and that what is explained regarding Tefillin* in the Shulchan Aruch* and in the Tanya*, at the beginning of chapter 41, be fulfilled in him. This is the purpose of Chabad* Chassidus*, and this is precisely what Chabad* signifies — the faculties of the intellect, which are highlighted by the Tefillin* — as these texts demonstrate.

You also tell me that you have begun to give a class at the Yeshivah*. May Hashem grant that you transmit to your students "the Torah* that Moshe* gave us" — our Torah*, Torah of life — as tractate Yoma* 72b states. For this, one must serve Hashem with love and fear. It is then that the exertion of Torah* ascends to the Holy One, blessed be He, as various texts establish, in particular the Tanya*, at the beginning of chapter 40.

לאחרי שתיקתו הארוכה, נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מד' סיון... להתחלת הנחת תפילין של בנם אשר לעמיל הכהן שי', הנה יה"ר שיהי' בשעה טובה ומוצלחת, ויקוים בו האמור בתוכן ענין התפילין כמבואר בשו"ע ובתניא ריש פרק מ"א, והוא הוא תכלית תורת החסידות חב"ד, והרי חב"ד הוא הענין הנ"ל, וכמבואר שם.

ולהודעתו אשר התחיל להגיד שיעור בהישיבה, יזכהו השי"ת להפשיע בתלמידיו התורה אשר שם משה, היא תורתנו תורת יים סם-חיים - וכמבואר בגמרא יומא ע"ב ב', ונעשה זה ע"י העבודה בדו"ר שאז עמלא דאורייתא סלקא לעילא קמי' קוב"ה, וכמבואר בכ"מ ומהם בתניא פרק מ'.
