Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the conclusion of the festival of Shavuos*. Regarding the esrogim* — from Calabria, Italy (see letter no. 3721) — a competent person who speaks the language of the country should visit the orchard discreetly and casually ask its owner how these trees grow.

It would also be good to ask these questions of other people residing in the same area who are not directly involved but who, as neighbors, surely know what happens in these orchards. They will therefore help clarify the situation.

Furthermore, it would be good to take three esrogim* that grew on different trees in this orchard and examine them in light of the indications given by the later Sages*, which also appear in the Shaar HaKollel*. Obviously, for all of this, the sooner the better, especially since you might be preceded in this by others.

There is no reason to assume that only the esrogim* of this orchard have not undergone grafting. They must be found in other places as well, which should therefore be investigated according to the same criteria. Obviously, I will also participate equally in the expenses that result.

You do not mention this young man, and you must therefore have no news of him. Yet he can surely assist you in this matter. Help may also come from someone who has many connections in your city and in your country, among whom some will agree to make this trip, will be eager, and will know how to obtain the answers to these questions skillfully. They will also find the means to collect seeds and seedlings, for I do not believe this can be done only during the month of Teves*.

You tell me that the brochure you had published for Pesach*, in the language of the country — in Italian (see letters no. 3149 and 3721) — has already appeared, and I am pleased. I am surprised that you did not enclose it with your letter, that you do not even specify whether it is in the form of a newspaper or a pamphlet. No doubt you will send it to me as soon as possible. I thank you in advance. And the same applies to the brochure for Shavuos*, to which you allude.

במענה על מכתבו ממוצאי חג השבועות - ובהנוגע לאתרוגים, הנה צריך הי' - מבלי לעשות רעש בזה - לנסוע איש מתאים למקום הפרדס, ושיהי' ג"כ אחד היודע בשפת המדינה, וידבר עם בעל הפרדס באון דמסיח לפי תומו - בהנוגע לאופן גידולם של האילנות וכו'. ומה טוב לדבר עד"ז גם עם אנשים צדדיים הדרים במקום ההוא שאינם נוגעים כלל בדבר, אבל בטח, כדרך שכנים, יודעים אופן הטפול בהפרדסים. ובמילא יש מקום לומר שיבררו פרט הנ"ל. נוסף על זה כדאי לקחת שלשה אתרוגים מאילנות שונים שבפרדס ולבדקם בהתאם להסימנים המובאים באחרונים. והובאו ג"כ בשער הכולל. ומובן שההקדם בכל זה ישובח. ובפרט שיש מקום לומר שיקדמונו אחרים.

כיון שאין טעם לומר שרק פרדס זה האו בלתי מורכב, ובודאי ישנם עוד מקומות כאלו, הנה כדאי הי' שיבדקו גם במקומות עוד, ויבררו כהנ"ל, ומובן שעל ההוצאות בדבר במקח השוה - גם אני אשתתף בזה.

כיון שאינו מזכיר ע"ד האברך... כנראה שאין אצלו ידיעות ממנו, ובודאי גם הוא הי' יכול לסייע בזה, ואפשר יסייע לו מר... שי', שבודאי הרבה מכירים לו בעירו ובמדינה, ומהם גם כאלו שיתרצו לעשות נסיעה כהנ"ל ויהיו מזורזים וממולחים לברר בכל הנ"ל.

ובקשר לזה - שימצאו גם מקום לקחת משם גרעינים ושתילים, כי אינני מאמין שרק בחדש טבת אפשר לעשות זה.

נהניתי ממ"ש שיצא כבר מהדפוס מש"כ בעניני פסח בלשון המדינה. ולפלא שלא צירף זה במכתבו, ואפילו אינו כותב אם נכתב זה במכ"ע בחוברת או כיו"ב. ובטח שישלח לכאן הנדפס בהקדם, ות"ח מארש. וה"ה בנוגע לעניני חג השבועת שכותב אודותם...
