With the help of Hashem

11 Elul* 5715

Brooklyn

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 4 Elul, in which you tell me that since you adopted the studies I mentioned in my correspondence, you have been feeling better. Nevertheless, you are not content with this and you are by no means satisfied, for you wish to become a completely different person.

The answer to your question is already found in the holy Tanya*, beginning with chapter 27. There, it speaks of the Beinoni*, the intermediate person, as Chassidus* defines him. And the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya and Decisor of the hidden part of the Torah, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed part of the Torah, says regarding him: "He should not be discouraged," for he gives pleasure to Hashem by serving Him in this manner. Consult this text.

The Mishnah* defines the purpose of man in these terms: "I was created to serve my Creator." What does it matter, then, which mission is assigned by the King, King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He? Indeed, it is said regarding the loftiest accomplishment: "If you have acted rightly, what have you given Him?" Conversely, the most humble and lowly act is also called a mitzvah*, of the same etymological root as tzavsa* — connection — for it enables one to enter into relationship with the Essence of Hashem.

It is regrettable to waste time searching for a goal, when you could have devoted it to exerting a positive influence on your fellow, in a joyful manner. From this perspective, one can also understand "fellow" to mean one's own body and animal soul*. And when one accomplishes all of this joyfully, the success is increased, as can be verified concretely.

May Hashem grant that you influence your friends in this domain. In this way, Hashem will grant you increased strength for the effort you wish to invest in your own person.

You also mention meditation before prayer. It is difficult to explain all of this in writing. You should therefore consult the elder Chassidim*, those who teach Chassidus in the Holy Land. They will advise you.

With my blessing that you fulfill the general and permanent Injunction: "Serve Hashem with joy," and that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
