Greetings and blessings,

I have received your letter from the end of Menachem Av. As you request, I will mention all those you cite at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, so that they obtain the fulfillment of their needs as you describe them in your letter.

You surely know that in such a case, the channel conveying the bond (1) is the fact of following the path he taught us, of adopting the practices he instituted. No doubt you maintain, or will henceforth maintain, the three studies that concern everyone. These pertain to Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*, and are well known, having been instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe. And "to whoever adds (3), it is added (4)."

I would like to know in greater detail the activities being carried out by the one you mention and his plans for the future. It is surely unnecessary to remind you, as well as your brother, to what extent it is a personal obligation, at all times and in all places — but all the more so in our orphaned generation and in the land "upon which the eyes of Hashem are always directed, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year" (2) — to contribute to the strengthening of Yiddishkeit* and its dissemination, in the spirit of the purest fear of Hashem.

How much more does this responsibility fall upon those who possess the merit of their ancestors, those ancestors having themselves conducted themselves in this manner during the decades of their physical lives. Moreover, we have had the merit of receiving the revelation of the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov*, of his disciples and the students of his disciples — the general Chassidus* that has been deepened and elucidated by the Chassidus of Chabad*. This teaching emphasizes the importance of loving one's fellow and explains that in reality, the two Precepts — "You shall love Hashem your Elokim*" and "You shall love your fellow as yourself" — are one.

Indeed, Rabbi Akiva* teaches that "You shall love your fellow as yourself" is "a great principle of the Torah*." The master of his master, Hillel the Elder*, who introduces sanctification even into the profane — since he expresses his teaching in Aramaic* — specifies in Tractate* Shabbos* 31a that "this is the entire Torah." He emphasizes and teaches that one must "love the creatures." The Tanya* explains this in chapter 32, and the Sefer HaMitzvos* (3) of the Tzemach Tzedek*, in the mitzvah* of loving one's fellow.

This point is so important that there is every reason to fear that the forces of evil manifest the most intense opposition, along with "the foreign god that is within you," in the expression of Tractate Shabbos 105b. Having no other alternative, the evil inclination* takes on the appearance and argumentation of a Torah scholar filled with fear of Hashem. Nevertheless, our Sages* say: "I created the evil inclination and I created the Torah as its antidote." They have made known to us its craftiness in our Torah, Torah of life, and in particular in Chassidus.

If one displays the appropriate firmness, emanating from the domain of true holiness, one can therefore foil its schemes and the arguments based upon them.

With my blessing that you give me good news regarding everything that has been said, as well as regarding your personal matters, and that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

(1) To the Rebbe from whom one seeks a blessing.
(2) In Eretz Yisrael*.
(3) The Derech Mitzvosecha*.
