With the help of Hashem

13 Elul* 5715

Brooklyn

To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav N. N. (1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 6 Elul. I thank you for announcing good news concerning the state of health of the two students and the opinion of the doctors regarding all the others. May Hashem grant that you immediately announce good and well-being, materially and spiritually alike, for yourself and for all your students.

Concerning what you write to me (2), you know my opinion. You draw a proof from the students who came here. You should know that with a few exceptions, I was not pleased by their coming. To my sorrow and my pain, I was able to verify that they would have been well advised to obey me and to continue their studies in France or in the Holy Land.

Moreover, if I had the ability and were followed in this, I would have sent most of them back to the other continent. You must understand what I mean. And our Sages* note that "we grieve over the first ones (3)."

What I have just written regarding the students applies, all the more so, to the young married men (4) and even more clearly to those who are already of a certain age. I add all of this in my letter because you will be able to disseminate it subsequently, at the appropriate time.

It is regrettable that I am still written to about this, for I observe from time to time how true everything that has been said is. Now, if one does not wish to obey, why pose the question only to then deviate from the answer given?

You mention the custom of the Sephardic* students who, early in the morning, recite Selichos* from the beginning of the month of Elul. It is quite clear that they must be allowed to maintain this custom, which they received from their ancestors, in accordance with what the Torah* rules in this domain. You tell me that this practice is detrimental to their studies, and I do not understand this. Are there not enough hours in the day? Moreover, they rise earlier and therefore have more time at their disposal. That time cannot be diminished.

I extend my blessing that you give me good news, be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, and prepare the students, during these auspicious days, in the proper manner, for the effort they must make toward themselves and toward others.

(1) Rav Nissan Nemanov, director of the Yeshivah of Brunoy, in the Parisian region. See, regarding him, Letter #3434.
(2) Presumably the desire of certain students to continue their studies in the United States.
(3) And therefore must not allow others to do the same.
(4) Already married.
