Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter from Rosh Chodesh* of the month of mercy, in which you tell me that your physical health has improved. You attribute this result to the improvement of your moral health, to your good conduct. This is indeed the case. The material depends on the spiritual, in particular for a Jewish man or woman, who belong to the "unique nation on the earth."
For it is precisely on the earth that true Unity is made manifest, as various texts explain and as the Rambam* indicates at the beginning of his Laws of the Foundations of the Torah. In this domain as well, it is clear that the deed is essential and not the theory. One must therefore forget one's faults entirely. In this way, gradually, they will disappear.
You mention the well-known transgression (1) and the means of rectifying it. In our era, one must forget all of this until marriage, which will take place at a good and auspicious time. This is what the responsa* of the Tzemach Tzedek* indicate, printed in the Gate of Addenda, volume 2, chapter 62. The mere fact of thinking about rectifying this transgression can... (2), Heaven forbid.
Likewise, you should avoid mortifications and fasts (3), as indicated in Iggeres HaTeshuvah* of the Alter Rebbe*. In this case, not multiplying them means, in effect, eliminating them. Indeed, they obstruct clarity of mind and the ability to deepen one's Torah* study. All of this is therefore well beyond your strength.
In place of these fasts, you should adopt those defined by the saying of the Rebbe Maharash*, printed in the Sefer HaToldos (4), at page 72, which you should consult. Likewise, you should increase the words of Torah and of prayer, if possible aloud, provided this is done without ostentation. Likewise, you should strive to draw the hearts of young people close to our Father Who is in Heaven.
It is clear that you must, in addition, apply all of this joyfully. I am surprised that you complain so much about your situation in your letter, while you say nothing of your intensive study of the revealed dimension of the Torah and of Chassidus*, nor of your activities within the framework of the young people of the Chabad* association.
With my blessing that you give good news and be inscribed and sealed for a good year,
For the Rebbe Shlita*,
The secretary,
(1) Involuntary seminal emission.
(2) Lead to committing it.
(3) See, on this subject, Letter #3399.
(4) The biography of the Rebbe Maharash authored by the Rebbe. It states there that fasting can also take the form of refraining from unnecessary speech or from slander.
