Igrot Kodesh · Letter 38 — Chanukah, Outreach, and the Era of Moshiach

Wednesday of Chanukah*

To our friend, of numerous qualities and multiple accomplishments, Rav Ozer Dubarov, Washington,

I greet you and bless you,

We are sending you, by separate mail, a copy of the letter of my father-in-law [1], the Rebbe Shlita, for the fast day [2] and the following days. It is unnecessary to stress to you the importance of distributing it as widely as possible in your city and in all the places where you exercise your influence, for example by posting it on the wall of the synagogue.

Likewise, various publications calling for Teshuvah and based on the words of my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, were sent to you before Rosh Hashanah*. I am surprised to have, for the moment, no response from you regarding this. You have not even confirmed that you received them.

The purpose of the Chanukah lights is to illuminate the outside and the public domain. And the Torah Ohr* emphasizes how important this is in the present era, that of the footsteps of Moshiach.

Moreover, the Halachah* rules that one who dwells on an upper floor — thus alluding to those who know, on a personal level, a greater elevation — must, since he has no door, that is to say no direct access to the attractions of this world, kindle the Chanukah lights near his window, which faces the public domain.

With my blessing of immediate Teshuvah, immediate Geulah,

שולחים אנו לו - בחבילה מיוחדת - טופס מכתב כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א ליום הת"צ ולימים שלאחריו , ולמותר להעיר שימת לב כת"ר לגודל נחיצות פרסומו בין החוגים היותר רחבים במחנו ובכ"מ שמצודתו פרושה, הדבקה בכתלי ביהכ"נ וכה"ג.

גם לפני ר"ה העבר נשלח לכת"ר עניני דפוס שונים בהנוגע להתעוררות תשובה וכו' משיחות כ"ק מו"ח אד"ש, ולפלא שלא נתכבדנו במענה ממנו עד עתה, ואף לא אישר קבלתם.

והנה נר חנוכה ענינה להאיר בחוץ ובר"ה, ומבואר בתו"א סד"ה כי אתה נרי ד', שזהו, בפרט, העבודה בדורותינו דעקבתא דמשיחא.

ונפסק לדינא שאפילו אם הוא דר בעלי' (ראיתי בני עלי' והם מועטין, כי עבודתם לצורך גבוה ומעלה מעלה, כמ"ש סש"ב ספ"י) ואין להם פתח (לעניני עוה"ז) צריך להניח נ"ח עכ"פ בחלון המאיר לר"ה.
