Rav Tuvya (Rav T. Blau, of Yerushalayim*),

Blessings and greetings,

I have duly received your letter and your request for a blessing.

On the occasion of the new year that approaches, for us and for all of Israel*, for good and for blessing, I hereby send you my blessing, for you and for all your family, that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually.

You raise the possibility of establishing an accounting based on the dates of the non-Jews (i.e., making reference to the common era). I do not know what the custom is in this regard in Yerushalayim*. In our countries, however, we do so without difficulty, when it is necessary or for any particular reason.

It appears that in earlier times, a different custom was practiced, as indicated by the responsa of the Maharam Shik*, Yoreh Deah*, section 171, and the responsa Pri HaSadeh*, volume 1, chapter 3. This is the reason these texts ask that the dates not be changed.

Nevertheless, can one imagine anyone greater than the Rema*, in his responsa, chapter 51; Rabbi Akiva Eiger*; and the Chasam Sofer*, in Igros Sofrim, pages 93 and 105; the responsa Chasam Sofer*, Even HaEzer, volume 1, chapter 43; and others who are cited by the Kolbo on mourning, by Rav Greenwald, on page 381 — all of whom permit citing a date of the common era.
