To Bas Sheva (B. S. Lazarov, of Yerushalayim*),

Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter from the eve of Rosh Hashanah*, in which you ask me how you can exert your influence upon your surroundings in order to strengthen Jewish practice through our Torah* and its mitzvos*.

I am surprised that you can have any doubt about this. You must yourself sense that your friends exert an influence upon you. In general, everyone is influenced by their surroundings, and our Sages emphasize (in tractate Sotah*, when they ask what leads a woman to unfaithfulness) that "friends have a great effect." How much more effective must be an effort carried out for Torah*, for mitzvos*, for the inner dimension of Torah* — which is its soul — namely, the teaching of Chassidus*, its practices, and its customs. Indeed, the attribute of good is far more powerful (than that of punishment).

In general, this effort comprises two points:

A) You yourself, through your conduct and your bearing, must set an example of what a young woman from a Chassidic* family ought to be.

B) Through explanations in appropriate terms, you must convey the teaching of Chassidus* and Chassidic stories to your friends. You will find in the Sefer HaSichos* and Likkutei Dibburim* (of the Previous Rebbe [the Frierdiker Rebbe*]) a rich and varied source of material on this subject. If you multiply your efforts in this direction, it is certain that your words will be accepted and will produce their effect, provided that they emanate from your heart.

It would be good for you to seek counsel on this matter from the leaders of the women and girls of Chabad* in Yerushalayim*. They will advise you on what should be done in concrete terms.

במענה על מכתבה מערב ראש השנה, בו שואלת באיזה אופן אפשר לה להוציא לפועל השפעה בסביבתה להוסיף בה ביהדות בתורתנו ומצותי'.

ולפלא גם השאלה בזה, כי הרי כמו שמרגשת בטח שהיא מושפעת מחברותי', וכמו שכל אדם מושפע מסביבתו, וכלשון רבותינו ז"ל הרבה חברות עושה, הרי על אחת כמה וכמה שתעמולה בעניני תורה ומצות ופנימיות התורה ונשמתה היא תורת החסידות הדרכותי' ומנהגי' יכולה להחדיר ולהשפיע כמה פעמים ככה, כי הרי מרובה מדה טובה.

ושתי נקודות כלליות בתעמולה זו, והם:

א) שהיא בעצמה תשמש דוגמה חי' בהנהגותי' ועניני' מה היא בת מבית חסידותי.

ב) על ידי הסברה באותיות המתאימות לפי הבנתם לחברותי' עניני חסידות וסיפורי חסידים, אשר חומר עשיר ורב גוני תמצא בזה בספרי השיחות ולקוטי דבורים, ובדברה בזה פעם אחר פעם, הנה בטוחים אנו שמתקבלים דברים כאלו ופועלים פעולתם, ובלבד שיהיו דברים היוצאים מן הלב.

ומהנכון הי' שתתייעץ בזה עם מנהיגות נשי ובנות חב"ד דירושלים ת"ו, והן יורוה בהנוגע לפועל.
