To the young man Shalom Leib (S. L. Lerman, of Tel Aviv),

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter from last week, in which you describe your state of mind in the new location where you find yourself. You tell me that you have organized a public prayer service.

No doubt you will not content yourself with this alone. You will also organize a study group for our Torah*, the Torah* of life. For the Torah* protects every Jew in every place where he finds himself. It is, indeed, "our life and the length of our days." If you make the proper efforts in this matter, you will know success, for words that emanate from the heart penetrate into the heart.

Without doubt, the young people of the Chabad* association will come to your aid to the fullest extent possible, especially if you need books or pairs of tefillin*. And who knows? Perhaps you find yourself in this place and in this environment in order to draw the hearts of the children of Israel* closer to our Father in Heaven. All the effort, the dedication, and the time one devotes to this are justified.

You surely know the story about the spiritual guide, Rav Yosef of Beshenkovich, and the one who attained teshuvah* through him, Reb Shlomo Leib. This story is related in a note of my father-in-law, the Rebbe [the Frierdiker Rebbe*], which is printed in the introduction to the Pokeach Ivrim* (written by the Mitteler Rebbe* for Reb Shlomo Leib).

The Holy One, blessed be He, acts "measure for measure," but in a greatly increased manner. He will therefore open your mind and your heart, so that you carry out your mission successfully, in accordance with the words of the Mishnah*: "I was created to serve my Creator" — in good health and with breadth of spirit.

Please extend my greetings and convey my blessing on the occasion of the festival (of Sukkos*) to your friends and your surroundings. The mitzvah* of the sukkah* surrounds a person from head to foot, which includes his garments and his shoes. Of course, this person experiences elevation in his sukkah* and, by eating in it, he fulfills a mitzvah*. He does the same by drinking in it, by sleeping in it, by performing any activity in it. In the words of our Sages: "You shall dwell in it as you would reside."

May Hashem therefore grant that each one of them know success, become aware of the truth, and understand that each person is given the means to serve the Creator — not only during prayer or the study of Torah*, but at all times, as it is stated: "In all your ways, know Him."

Everything depends on you. If you truly desire it, you will find that all of this is easy, for Hashem asks of people only what they can actually accomplish, according to the strength that is granted them.

With my blessing for a joyous festival and for good tidings of all that has been said,

נעם לי לקבל מכתבו משבוע שעבר, בו כותב אודות מצב רוחו במקומו החדש, ואשר ארגן מנין מתפללים וכו'.

ובודאי לא יסתפק בזה, ויארגן גם כן קבוצה ללימוד בתורתנו תורת חיים, ואשר היא המגינה על כל אחד ואחד מבני ישראל בכל מקום שהם, כי היא חיינו ואורך ימינו, וכשישתדל בזה כדבעי יצליח, כי הרי דברים היוצאים מן הלב נכנסים אל הלב, ובודאי אשר צעירי אגו"ח יהיו בעזרתו כפי יכלתם, ובפרט אם נצרך לספרים או לזוגות תפילין וכיו"ב, ואין אתנו יודע עד מה, והרי אפשר שזהו תכלית הכנסו להמצא במקום פלוני ובסביבה פלונית - לקרב לבות בני ישראל לאבינו שבשמים, אשר בשביל זה כדאית כל הטורח וכל המרץ וכל הזמן, ובודאי ידוע לו הסיפור ע"ד המשפיע ר' יוסף מבעשענקוביץ והבע"ת ר' שלמה ליב - ברשימת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, שנדפסה במבוא לספר פוקח עורים - ומדתו של הקב"ה מדה כנגד מדה אלא שכמה פעמים ככה - לפתוח לבו ומוחו למלא תפקידו, כמאמר המשנה, אני נבראתי לשמש את קוני מתוך בריאות הנכונה והרחבת הדעת.

מטובו למסור פ"ש וברכת החג לחבריו בסביבתו, ויהי רצון אשר, ע"ד מצות סוכה, שהמצוה מקפת את כל האדם מראשו ועד רגליו ועם לבושיו - וגם המנעלים - בכלל, ועוד זאת, אשר נתעלה האדם ובאכילתו בסוכה מקיים מצוה, וכן בשתייתו ובשינתו ועוד ועוד - כל הנעשה בסוכה - וכלשון דרז"ל תשבו כעין תדורו, הנה יזכה כל אחד ואחד מהם ויצליח להכיר את האמת אשר היכולת הנתונה לכל אדם לעבוד את בוראו לא רק בעת התפלה ולימוד תורה אלא בכל דרכיך דעהו, ואין הדבר תלוי אלא ברצונו, ואם ירצה באמת הרי סוף סוף יווכח אשר עבודה קלה היא, כי אין הוא מבקש אלא לפי כחן.
