To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Meir (Rav M. Amsel, of Brooklyn),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter. You noticed that one of my letters was printed in a periodical that one may fear will not be preserved (by its readers, which has the effect of discarding words of Torah*). Indeed, statements of our Sages and a verse were cited in that letter.

In this matter, I base myself upon the practice of the great figures of our people in the countries where we previously resided (in Eastern Europe), as well as upon the practice of my father-in-law, the Rebbe [the Frierdiker Rebbe*], whose merit protects us, when he was in the United States. Indeed, when it was necessary, he would publish words of encouragement in the press, and he would include therein commentaries of our Sages and verses.

Needless to say, precautions were taken to the extent possible. Thus, the Name of Hashem was not written out in full, and we also adopt this precaution, including in the publication of pamphlets and even when they are published in the local language, as the halachic* authorities explain — since the Names expressed in other languages are also sacred.

You know the explanation of the verse (Shir HaShirim* 2:4) "His banner arouses my love," given by our Sages (in Midrash Shir HaShirim Rabbah*, chapter 2, paragraph 13), according to which "the act of omitting (the Name) arouses My love" — for "diglo" ("his banner") is an anagram of "daleg" ("to omit").

With my blessing that you be definitively sealed for a good year and have a joyous festival (of Sukkos*),

במענה על שאלתו, במה שראה מכתבי נדפס בעתון שיש חשש שעתונים אינם נשמרים, והרי במכתב זה הובא גם מאמרי רז"ל ופסוק.

והנה יסודי הוא מנהג גדולי ישראל בכגון דא במדינותינו לפנים, וגם נוהג כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע בהיותו בארצות הברית, אשר לעת הצורך הי' מדפיס בעתונים וכיו"ב דברי התעוררות ואפילו אם היו מועתקים בהם מאמרי חז"ל ופסוקים. אף שכמובן שבמה שהי' אפשר היו נזהרים, היינו שלא לכתוב השם כצורתו וכו', אשר גם בזהירות זו נהגינן ואפילו בהנדפס בחוברות וכיו"ב, ואפילו בהמכתבים בשפת המדינה ע"פ המבואר בפוסקים אשר יש קדושה גם בשמות שבלע"ז.

וכבר ידועה דרשת רז"ל עה"כ ודגלו עלי אהבת ודלוגו עלי - מדלג על האזכרה - אהבה .
