To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Tzvi (Rav T. Har Shaffer, of Raanana, in the Holy Land),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from Isru Chag*, in which you tell me that you were born in Lubavitch and that you retain in your memory various images of that town from the era of the Rebbe Maharash* and his son, the Rebbe Rashab*. Your recollections pertain to the town of Lubavitch itself and also to the visitors who traveled there from time to time.

It would be good for you to commit these recollections to writing, for very few people precisely remember what took place at that time, and who the visitors and the figures of the court (of the Rebbe) were. Certainly, not everything that is written warrants being published. However, it is worthwhile to preserve these notes in writing. A portion of them will surely be useful for what is published, even though it is difficult to be certain about this in advance.

Moreover, several decades have passed, and what is not frequently recalled is not always retained in one's memory. Within your own recollections, you should yourself distinguish between what is beyond doubt and what is not entirely certain, at least in some aspects. It would be good for you to note all of this in your writings.

Needless to say, I would be very interested to review these notes, for I collect everything pertaining to the history of Lubavitch, particularly of that era — relating to the Rebbe Maharash* and the beginning of the generation of his son, the Rebbe Rashab* — to which no one among the historians of Chassidus* devotes attention.

In accordance with your request, a pocket-size Tanya* has been sent to you. You will no doubt confirm its receipt.

במענה על מכתבו מא"ח, בו כותב אשר יליד ליובאוויטש הנהו ונשמר בזכרונו כמה ענינים מתקופה בהיותו בליובאוויטש היא תקופת כ"ק אדמו"ר מוהר"ש ובנו כ"ק אדמו"ר מוהרש"ב, הן בנוגע לליובאוויטש עצמה ולהאורחים אשר בקרו בה מזמן לזמן.

ומהנכון הי' אם יכול להעלות על הכתב זכרונות אלו כיון שמעטים מאד אלו הזוכרים המאורעות דימים ההם על בורים, וגם טפוסי האנשים האורחים אנשי החצר וכו', אף שלא כל הדברים הנכתבים ראוים לבוא ג"כ בדפוס, הנה גם השמירה בכתב כדאית היא, ובטח חלק מרשימות אלו יוכלו לנצלם גם בשביל ענינים המתפרסמים בדפוס, אף שמובן שמראש אי אפשר לדעת ברור בזה, פשוט שצריכים להיות בטוח שהענינים הנרשמים מתאמים אל המציאות, ובפרט שעברו כבר כמה עשיריות שנים, ומילתא דלא רמי' עלי דאינש לא תמיד נרשם בזכרונו כמו הוא, ובטח גם בזכרון כבודו יש ענינים שאין כל ספק אצלו בתיאורם וגם כאלה שמסופק הוא בקצתם או באיזה פרטים, ומה טוב שגם על זה יציין ברשימותיו.

ומובן שאתענין למאד לראות את הרשימות כיון שמקבץ אני חומר לדברי ימי ליובאוויטש ובפרט לאותה התקופה שעדיין לא נמצאו לה כל גואלים וכותבי דברי ימי החסידות מתקופת אדמו"ר מוהר"ש ותחלת תקופת בנו כ"ק אדמו"ר מוהרש"ב, ות"ח מראש.

כבקשתו נשלח לו בפ"ע תניא פורמט כיס, ובטח יאשר קבלתו.
