To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav David (Rav D. Eisenberg, of Tel Aviv),

Greetings and blessings,

I was pleased to receive your letter of 24 Tishrei, which followed a particularly long silence, although during that time I was concerned about your condition and I obtained news of you indirectly. The article you published in She'arim was enclosed. I thank you for thinking to send it to me.

I have good hope that this will be only a beginning. I mean that you will use your abilities in the domain of Chassidus* in particular, to disseminate the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov*, of his disciples and the students of his disciples, their customs and their practices, through all the channels and all the means at your disposal.

Nothing stands in the way of the will, particularly in our era, when one can observe with one's own eyes that the outlook of Chassidim* and of Chassidus* is gaining ground and attracting many people in various circles, including the broadest. The aptitude of the one who extends the invitation (to adopt the outlook of Chassidus*) and leads activities in this domain is therefore decisive.

When Hashem grants someone writing abilities that enable him to reach several thousand Jews, his possibilities are greatly multiplied. His responsibility and his merit are likewise multiplied.

It is quite clear that work directed toward others does not exempt one from the effort invested in oneself, as it is stated: "If you see someone who is unclothed, cover him." Our Sages explain that this also alludes to Torah* and mitzvos*. And the verse concludes: "Do not hide yourself from your own flesh."

I enclose a copy of my letter addressed to all. I hope it will interest you.

לאחרי הדומי' הכי ארוכה (אף שבמשך זמן זה שאלתי וקבלתי ידיעות משלומו וענינו - מן הצד), נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מכ"ד תשרי עם מאמרו בשערים המוסגר בו, ות"ח בעד שימת לבבו אשר בשילוח מאמרו זה אלי.

ותקותי חזקה אשר אין זה אלא ההתחלה, כוונתי שינצל את כשרונותיו בכרם החסידות ביחוד להפיץ תורת הבעש"ט תלמידיו ותלמידי תלמידיו הדרכותי' ומנהגי' על ידי כל הצנורות והאופנים העומדים לרשותו, ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון, ובפרט בימינו אלה אשר רואים אפילו בעיני בשר אשר דוקא מהלך הרוח של חסידים וחסידות כובש מסילות וצודה נפשות בחוגים שונים ורחבים, ואין הדבר תלוי אלא בכשרון המעורר ועושה בזה, ומי שחננו השי"ת בעט סופרים אשר עי"ז דבריו מגיעים לאלפים ואלפים מבני ישראל, היכולת שלו גדולה פי כמה, וביחד עם זה גם האחריות והזכות.

ומובן ופשוט שהעבודה והשתדלות עם הזולת אינה פוטרת ח"ו מהעבודה בעצמו וכמ"ש כי תראה ערום וכסיתו וגו' - וידועה דרשת רז"ל על פ' זה שהכוונה גם לעניני תורה ומצות, ומסיים הכתוב: ומבשרך לא תתעלם.
