Igrot Kodesh · Letter 388 — Yahrtzeit Commemorations and Torah Thought

Volume 2 · Letter 223

By the grace of Hashem,

25 Menachem Av 5708,

To the distinguished chassid who fears Hashem,

Rav H. H. Havlin,

I greet and bless you,

You have surely received my letter of last week asking you, for the time being, to do nothing for Rebbetzin Sheina*. In the meantime you have surely also received the booklet published on the occasion of the liberation festival*.

The anniversary of my father's passing* has surely been observed as it ought. Please withdraw from the fund, on my behalf, three pounds for Yeshivat Torat Emet*, three for Kollel Chabad* and three for the International Tehillim* Group. I will provide the equivalent from here when you inform me.

I will conclude with a word of Torah*, drawing on what I explained at the anniversary of the passing, during a chassidic gathering* — namely, an interpretation, allusive and based on Chassidut*, of the first Mishnah* of tractate Kelim*, chapter 24. I will reproduce it briefly here.

The curved shield* — one that protects the body — alludes to one who puts Torah and mitzvot* into practice so that they protect him from all difficulty. What is more, during battle one lies upon this shield. For one can be engaged in struggle against the evil inclination* yet find oneself lying down, that is, with head and foot at the same level.

In such a case, the intellect — which the standing position symbolizes — does not function. The love and fear of Hashem aroused through contemplation, symbolized by the sitting position — causing the head to descend toward the foot — are not revealed. Only natural love and fear remain, or even the hidden love, within which there is also a measure of fear.

Certainly this is only the beginning of divine service*, yet personal effort is then necessary. One feels no attraction toward spirituality. One can therefore become corrupted in ways permitted by the Torah.

Consequently one can contract impurity through contact — not acting wrongly by nature, but rather due to the coarseness of one's character, through deep immersion in worldly pleasures, including those for which one feels no particular attraction.

Such a situation results from the person's own actions, serving Hashem without any enthusiasm, without intellectual engagement, without being 'seated,' but truly in a fallen position.

The second category of shields — which does not allow lying or sitting — alludes to a purely intellectual service of Hashem, detached from feelings: the standing position, meaning meditation upon the good that the Divine provides. Even so, the struggle* continues and one may become its victim, falling to the ground by awakening one's enthusiasm for worldly pleasures. Impurity is therefore possible and can be contracted through contact with the dead — that is, through the bite of the serpent*, the sin of the Tree of Knowledge*.

The third category consists of 'the Arab shield*' — that is, the situation of one who makes no intrinsic personal use of Torah and mitzvot, being an 'Arab'* in the domain of holiness, meaning one 'who prostrates himself before the dust'* — which symbolizes submission — as it is said: 'May my soul be as dust before all.'

This is therefore the smallest shield, as Rabbi Ovadya of Bartenora* emphasizes, since it alludes to one who no longer feels his own person, desires only to bring satisfaction and joy to Hashem. For the Master's pleasure becomes his own and he is nothing more than an emanation of his Creator. No struggle against him is conceivable, for his enemies melt away. He is therefore consistently pure.

Wishing you all the good,

Rav Menachem Schneerson,

Notes

(1) Rav Chanoch Hendel Havlin, Jerusalem. See letter no. 179.

(2) To observe mourning, even though his death had been established as per letter no. 382.

(3) Of 12 Tammuz*.

(4) 20 Menachem Av*.

(5) Recited by the mourner.

(6) To surround the body.

(7) As defined by this Mishnah.

(8) Against the evil inclination.

(9) From the sin of the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil.

(10) As this people did in the time of Avraham*, according to the Midrash*.

(11) This level is therefore spiritually the highest. It designates the person who is completely submissive and can therefore not contract impurity.
