To the young man Shalom Leib (S. L. Lerman, of Tel Aviv),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter in which you tell me that you belong to the military rabbinate. You describe your duties and specify that you do not always remain in the same place, that you move about.
It is unnecessary to point out to you how important is the supervision of food (in the Israeli army, in this case) to ensure that it is kosher* in accordance with halachah*. This is an essential mitzvah*, and it is further stated that non-kosher food obstructs the heart and the mind, Heaven forbid, which has the effect of reducing a person's capacities and his aptitude for absorbing the Torah* and the mitzvos*, including the rationally understandable precepts. The Tanya* alludes to this at the beginning of chapter 8. You can surely take advantage of your duties to explain to those you encounter the importance of kosher food.
Nevertheless, it is quite clear that you cannot content yourself with these official duties. You encounter many young men and you are perhaps the only person who can transmit Jewish values to them. You must therefore remind them of their origin — the fact that they are descendants of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov — and emphasize to them that, whatever their current situation, they must and can, in a single instant, become children of Yisrael in the fullest sense of the term, in their daily existence.
You will surely find, in the Chassidic discourses and talks, ideas and explanations that will be useful to you in conveying all of this. And the assurance has been given to us that the Chassidim*, when they undertake such endeavors, achieve success. However, it is necessary, as our Sages say, to utter words that emanate from the heart.
May Hashem grant that you act in this manner, to the fullest extent of your means. You will thereby increase the blessing and success that Hashem grants — including for yourself personally. The words of the verse "Do not turn away from your own flesh" will be fulfilled for you, and you will ascend from one level to the next in the study of Torah* and the practice of mitzvos* in the best possible manner.
With my blessing, and greeting your friends who wish to put into practice the commandments of the Creator. May Hashem grant them success so that it be so indeed. Then, in the words of the verse (Devarim* 23:15): "Your camp shall be holy" and "Hashem your Elokim walks in the midst of your camp."
