To the Rav, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Tzvi (Rav T. Shusterman),

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 17 Cheshvan, which followed a particularly long silence. Now, this letter does not indicate the reason for this silence and, moreover, you do not specify how you made use of the month of Tishrei* — which has a comprehensive scope, conditioning the entire year, and is satiated with all the good. It is therefore incumbent upon the person to reveal this good during the other months of the year. May Hashem grant that the deficiency be only in your letter and in the news you share with me, but that all of this was fully accomplished.

You tell me that one cannot maintain the minyan* for the evening prayer at the synagogue. It would be good to find a solution to this situation. Indeed, this is not merely a matter of communal prayer, but also of the fixed and solid character of the synagogue, whose members and neighbors must know that it is open as often as possible.

As you know, in earlier eras, it was desired and requested that a synagogue be open all day and all night, so that those in the vicinity would know that if they have a few minutes of free time, they should spend them within the four cubits of prayer or consulting a book. Spiritually, this is very important. One has been able to observe, and continues to observe, what results from this in daily life.

I was, indeed, pleased by the various classes you mention. However, I am surprised that none of them deals with the halachos* that are necessary for daily life, as I have written to several Chassidim*. Ultimately, this is indeed the purpose of man — to fear Hashem and observe His mitzvos*.

You mention the luminaries (the great Sages) of Yisrael. You no doubt know that various articles on this subject can be found in the Conversations with the Youth (the Rebbe cites both the Yiddish and English versions of this periodical).

I enclose the Kovetz Lubavitch*, recently published. You will surely make its content accessible to the broadest public. The merit of the public depends on you.

With my blessing,
