Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 19 Cheshvan, with its contents.
As you request, I will mention, at a propitious time, your name and those of the members of your family at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe [the Frierdiker Rebbe*], whose merit protects us, so that you have a year of success — which also implies that each day be filled with its own specific content and that the mission of each day be assigned to a specific person. For no two people can be identical, and their missions therefore differ as well.
You surely know the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, as recorded in the calendar HaYom Yom*, according to which — despite the immense importance of bread, of which it is said, "bread restores the heart of man," even the lowliest (the word enosh, man, can also be read as anush, lowly) — one who has the ability to string pearls and precious stones does not in any way fulfill his obligation by baking this bread (one who can assume an elevated mission cannot be content with a lesser one).
He (the Frierdiker Rebbe*) wrote this in a letter he addressed to a student of the Yeshivah*, responding to the latter's report of the studies he had set for himself in the revealed dimension of the Torah*.
From this, a lesson emerges for each one of us, yourself included. As important as your action may be in strengthening Yiddishkeit* in general, it in no way exempts you from your obligation. Indeed, you had the merit of growing up in a Chassidic* family, a family of Chassidim* of Chabad*. To a certain degree, and even in a definitive manner, you have tasted Chassidus*, its customs and its practices, one of whose fundamental principles is precisely the dissemination of the wellsprings — which, moreover, must be carried out outward.
As you know, Chabad* Chassidus* considers that everything must be integrated profoundly. Now, in practically everything you have written in periodicals, which I have had occasion to read, I have not seen you assume this profound and moral mission.
Of course, I do not mean that you should use newspapers solely for this, for there are many ways to put this mission into practice. The one who carries it out must choose the most effective and the most stable way. I was merely noting that I have not seen you use your abilities in any other manner (than the simplest, one that does not highlight Chassidus*). Likewise, your articles, to which I referred, have not been used to spread the wellsprings of Chassidus* outward.
I am convinced that by reflecting, even briefly, on all of this, you will discover various ways to use your faculties to achieve this result. Thus, commenting on the verse "Honor Hashem with your possessions (mehonecha)," our Sages say: "Do not read mehonecha, your possessions, but mechonecha, with that which Hashem has granted you."
May Hashem grant that you engage in this reflection as soon as possible. In this way, you will commit yourself to it without delay and will know success, in the measure of the Holy One, blessed be He, Who acts "measure for measure" (in the manner that man acts toward Him). To this, Hashem will add, for you and for your wife, great Chassidic satisfaction from all your children and from yourselves.
With my blessing,
