Igrot Kodesh · Letter 39 — Chanukah, Outreach, and the Era of Moshiach

Fourth light of Chanukah 5703,

To our friend, of numerous qualities and multiple accomplishments, Rav Avraham Eliyahu Axelrod, Baltimore,

I greet you and bless you,

We have sent you a copy of the letter of my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, for the fast day and for the following days. It is unnecessary to stress to you how important it is to give it the widest distribution, everywhere where your influence is exercised, for example by posting it on the wall of the synagogue.

I am surprised to have received no response to the letter of the Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch, dated the 21st of Marcheshvan.

To conclude on what has just been said and on what is timely, the festival of Chanukah, I will add that the purpose of the lights of this festival is to illuminate the outside. And, even one who dwells on an upper floor — thus alluding to men who know a great elevation — must place them near the window that faces the public domain, in order to illuminate the place of darkness, the forces of evil that are entirely impure.

Such is the meaning of the verse "Hashem will illuminate my darkness," which concerns particularly our generations of the period of the footsteps of Moshiach, especially when one experiences the birth pangs of Moshiach and endures terrible persecutions.

It is then necessary for the Tzaddik* to annul the Divine Decree. For him to succeed, the wicked must attain Teshuvah, the son of the ignorant must, in his turn, gain knowledge of the Torah.

ולסיים מענינא הנ"ל ומענינא דימי חנוכה, הנה נר חנוכה ענינה להאיר בחוץ ואפי' הוא דר בעלי' - ראיתי בני עלי' והם מועטים - צריך להניחה בחלון הסמוכה לרה"ר להאיר במקום החושך, גקה"ט (דרושי חנוכה רנ"ט) ונת' בתו"א סד"ה כי אתה נרי שזה ג"כ ענין דוה' יגי' חשכי דדורותינו עקבתא דמשיחא, וי"ל שבפרט בזמן דחבלי משיח וגזירות קשות ר"ל (סנה', צז, ב) צ"ל ענין דהקב"ה גוזר וצדיק מבטלה שזה בא ע"י שעושין מרשע בעל תשובה, וכפי' התרגום ופירש"י (ירמי' טו, יט) וע"פ דרז"ל (ב"מ פה, א) הוא ע"י ת"ת לבן ע"ה.
