Igrot Kodesh · Letter 390 — Purpose of the Four Spiritual Worlds

Volume 2 · Letter 225

By the grace of Hashem,

Friday, 1 Elul 5708,

To the distinguished young man, the yeshiva* student Y. L.,

I greet and bless you,

I received your letter and the questions you pose are not as challenging as you claim. In fact they touch on fundamental points, but since these are so common, little attention is paid to them.

The widespread use of certain ideas leads one to think they are perfectly understood. Yet a proper analysis shows that it is difficult to perceive and articulate them.

What has just been said holds true in every domain and every discipline. The most thorough attention must be given to the foundational principles of that science and its rules.

Such questions are difficult to set out in writing, particularly as time does not allow for a thorough analysis. I will therefore respond briefly.

Question: Why is the world of Atzilut* hidden from all created beings? Why is Beriah* the world of the Heavenly Throne*? Why are the angels found in the world of Yetzirah*? And why is the world of Asiyah* that of the stars?

Answer: Every reasoned creation must have a purpose, a goal, which it must attain both in its general formulation and in each of its particular aspects.

Our Sages teach that the purpose of the creation of the worlds is the revelation of Heavenly kingship, as it is said (Yeshayah* 43:7): 'Everything that bears My Name, I have created for My glory, I have formed it and made it.' Our Sages comment on this statement in the sixth chapter of tractate Avot*.

Everything that exists below has a source above. Likewise, earthly monarchy derives from Heavenly kingship. Now it is possible to have knowledge of the ways of a king of flesh and blood, as our Sages say in tractate Berachot* 58a. By observing him, one can therefore, in accordance with the teaching of the Sages, form a conception of Heavenly kingship.

What has just been established will allow us to understand an expression common in the Midrash*: 'This is like a king...' Moreover, Midrash Eichah Rabbah* begins: 'The Holy One blessed be He said to the angels: What does a king of flesh and blood do? Well, I do the same.'

Our Sages draw many teachings from the behavior of an earthly monarch and the manner in which he reigns. His court keeps its distance from him. It is, in the expression of the Tanya*, 'separate, foreign, and distant.' The Rambam* states that he must inspire awe, not stand facing another person, not address him with gentle words, address him only by his name. Despite this, one must accept his kingship, for one must be aware, at least to a certain degree, of his greatness.

Furthermore, the king — at least one fit to reign — is not merely a monarch. He possesses intrinsic worth. Nevertheless he enters into relation with his people by reigning and governing. Here is how he does so.

The people can in no way comprehend the personal qualities of the king. This is why, our Sages say, one may not see him unclothed. His quality, insofar as he reigns over a people, consists in determining, by his wisdom and understanding, the needs of that people even before they themselves become aware of them.

Then the king goes to his palace, takes his seat on his throne, and in accordance with what he has decided — out of the full depth of his wisdom — he gives instructions to the ministers on how to govern the land, sometimes specifying the reason. It is clear that those who are inside the palace and see the king seated on his throne cannot forget him and have no need of proof that he exists.

Nevertheless the king desires that his subjects at the outermost reaches of his kingdom obey him as well. He therefore dispatches emissaries to them, charged with making his will known to the entire people, without however providing them any explanation.

With all the distinctions that must be introduced, what has just been said applies identically to the chain of the worlds.

The king when he is alone alludes to what precedes the Tzimtzum*.

Then the king departs from his intrinsic greatness to reflect, through his wisdom, upon the needs of the people. This image corresponds to the spiritual world of Atzilut — a complete world in its own right, since the needs of the people can at this stage be assessed, yet one that remains hidden from all created beings. For, as we have seen, the people have no knowledge of the king's reflection.

The king then goes to his palace, which illustrates the spiritual world of Beriah. There he sits on his throne and the people submit to him. This is the 'hidden world.'

Afterward the king dispatches his emissaries — who are the angels, found in the spiritual world of Yetzirah. These, when they don the appropriate garment, can also be revealed in the world of Asiyah. They carry the king's orders: 'this is permitted, that is not; this person is not guilty, that one is.'

Finally one arrives at the outermost edge of the kingdom — the lowest world, that of the stars which have a body and a soul. There are found all the created beings of this most inferior level of creation.

With my blessing of immediate teshuvah*, immediate redemption*,

Rav Menachem Schneerson,

(2) The contraction of the Heavenly Light that is at the origin of the creative process. Before the Tzimtzum, creation has as yet no meaning.
