Igrot Kodesh · Letter 392 — Spiritual Supremacy of Human Mitzvah Performance

Volume 2 · Letter 227

By the grace of Hashem*,

10 Elul 5708,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav M. Z.[1],

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your letter and the ninety-five[2], a gift from Mr. Dalfon[3], which were enclosed with it. This is no doubt only a beginning, and I thank you for it.

My reply was delayed by my many occupations, as I must prepare the publication of the summaries of the Tzemach Tzedek* and his commentaries on the Tanya*, with several additions. I am hopeful that this work will be published as early as next week.

I do not possess the Zecher Yehudah and the Tzeror Hachaim.

I will conclude with words of Torah*. In the book about to be published, I noted an explanation of the Baal Shem Tov* according to which the angel Mikhael* would exchange the entirety of his divine service for one of a Jew's four Tzitzit*[4]. Now, why is it specifically this Mitzvah* that is mentioned here? And why is one Tzitzit* mentioned, rather than merely one thread of Tzitzit*?

The explanation is found in the Zohar*, volume 3, page 216a, which notes that the initials of the names of the four angels who are the four legs of the celestial Chariot* form the word Gemara*. Mikhael* is one of them. Now, the Tikkunei Zohar*, in Tikkun 10, specifies that one who wears Tzitzit* is considered as having built the Heavenly Throne[4].

The angel Mikhael* therefore considers that, through one Tzitzit*, he is regarded as having accomplished those achievements. He would thus prefer to act in a concrete manner, and is ready for that purpose to exchange the value represented by the celestial Chariot*.

That is therefore why only one of the four Tzitzit* is mentioned here. Indeed, that is all that Mikhael* possesses, as we have just explained[5]. In my printed notes, I also develop another explanation, based on the revealed part of the Torah*[6].

I wish you to be inscribed and sealed for a good year. Greeting all those dear to you,

Rav Menachem Schneerson
