Igrot Kodesh · Letter 397 — Yeshiva Funding, Halachic Practices, and Tanya Commentary

19 Elul 5708,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav H. H.[1],

I greet you and bless you,

I reply to your letter of 8 Elul*.

A) It seems to me that I already wrote to you that you must, on your part, employ every means to obtain an increased grant from the Chicago Yeshivot* Committee[2]. Please let me know what amount it allocated to you for the year 5708.

B) Please transmit this message as well to the administration of Yeshiva Tzemach Tzedek* Midrash Shmu'el[3]. That institution must provide us with information about its functioning — if this has not yet been done — indicate the number of its students, who the teachers are, and what funding has been obtained.

C) I wrote[4] that it is not our custom to lead the prayer on the Shabbat* preceding a relative's anniversary of passing, including Friday night. This means that we do not follow the view according to which it is necessary to do so. There is, however, no prohibition against serving as the prayer leader, just as on any other Shabbat*.

D) You were sent, as a representative of our institution, the summaries and commentaries on the Tanya* composed by the Tzemach Tzedek*, with several additions. You have no doubt received this book, and you will endeavour, as far as possible, to have a good article published about it in a suitable venue, so that its teachings may spread widely.

E) On that note, perhaps you will finally send us your father's commentaries on the Tanya*? I was told they are in your possession, and they surely reproduce the words of Chassidim* of the early generations.

F) I thank you for informing me of how my father's yahrzeit*[5] was marked at Yeshiva Torat Emet*.

G) Rav B. C. Schneerson[6] wrote too brief an article on the Tzemach Tzedek* in a Jerusalem newspaper. It would be good for him to write a longer one for the periodical Kol Torah*, as Rav Weber promised some time ago.

H) A Chassid* currently living in the Paris suburbs, Rav Shneur Zalman Taubel, wishes you to send him a beautiful medium-sized pair of Rashi Tefillin*. Please let me know whether this is possible and at what price.

For now, I will conclude by wishing you and all the members of your family, your students, and your close ones to be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, of visible and tangible good, material and spiritual.

במענה על מכ' מח' אלול... כמדומה שכבר כתבתי לו שכדאי שיתחילו עתה בהתעוררות האפשרית מצדם בנוגע להגדלת חלקם בחלוקת ועד הישיבות דשיקאגא ונכון שיודיעני כמה קבלו מהם ע"ח שנת תש"ח.

ד) כהנ"ל מטובו לעורר גם את הנהלת ישיבת צ"צ מדרש שמואל ועליהם להודיע ג"כ פרטים בעבודתם מספר תלמידים ר"מ תקציבים כו' אם עדיין לא עשו כ"ז.

ה) מש"כ אני שאין נוהגין לעבור לפה"ת בשבת שלפני יאצ"ט (וגם קבלת שבת בכלל) היינו להוציא מהדעה שמדייקת במנהג זה אבל פשיטא שאין הכוונה שיש איזה חשש בדבר ועכ"פ לא גרע מסתם שבת.

ו) בתור ב"כ נשלח לו כדברי דפוס ס' קיצורים והערות להתניא מהצ"צ עם כמה הוספות ובטח יאשר קבלתם וגם ישתדל אם אפשרי שיהי' מאמר הערכה עליו במכ"ע המתאים ויפוצו המעינות חוצה.

ז) ובהמשך לזה אולי סו"ס אפשר לשלח לכאן העתקת הגהות אביו ז"ל על התניא שאמרו לי שיש אצלם אשר בטח יש בתוכם ביאורים מחסידים הזקנים ג"כ וכיו"ב.

ח) ת"[ח] על הידיעה משמירת יאצ"ט אאמו"ר ז"ל בישיבת תו"א.

ט) הרב ב"ש שי' שניאורסאן הדפיס הערכה קצרה יותר מדי על הצ"צ בעתון בירות"ו אולי כדאי שידפיס באריכות קצת עכ"פ במכ"ע קול תורה ובהתאם להבטחת הרב ובר שי' מכבר.

י) אחד מאנ"ש שי' הנמצאים עתה בסביבות פאריז ושמו הרב שניאור זלמן טאובל מבקש לשלח לו זוג תפילין דרש"י מהודרים בינונים בגודל ומטובו להודיעני אפשריות הדבר ומחירם.

ובשל עתה אסיים בברכת כוח"ט לו ולכב"ב שי' ולכל הנלוים והמושפעים ממנו לשנה טובה ומתוקה בטוב הנראה והנגלה בגו"ר.
