Igrot Kodesh · Letter 398 — Jewish Education and Environment for a Young Woman

You are looking for books for your daughter. We have sent, and continue to send, to your city — through the bureau[1] or the committee of settlements[2] — all the publications of Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch*. Among those, you will surely find what suits her. Naturally, I cannot offer my view from here on other books without seeing and examining them.

Nevertheless, since you raise this matter, I would say that one must not exaggerate the importance of what is only secondary — in this case, books for reading or study, important as they undeniably are — when one neglects, to use no stronger a word, what is essential, namely the school and the environment.

Certainly, you cannot at this time find a place for her in a good school. But why do you not endeavour to create a suitable class for her? Have you at least tried, even without success, to do so?

And, if that is truly impossible, why could she not be a teacher or educator in a good school? Then there would no longer be a problem of class placement, and she could make use of her qualities in one or several subjects. She would then be in the right environment for her Judaism to remain intact, and for her to make the transition — especially at her age — between the old way of life of our country and that of Europe in general. This is particularly important.

You tell me you are distressed by this situation, but you surely know the proverb my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita, cites in the name of his father, the Rebbe*[3]: 'One concrete action is worth more than a thousand complaints.'

I took the liberty of elaborating somewhat on this idea, though I had not done so until now, as I had not yet had the occasion to raise this subject with you. In any case, please excuse my intervention in a matter that concerns you personally.

You will find enclosed the fascicle published on the occasion of 18 Elul*, which you will make widely available.

I conclude by wishing you to be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually.

...בנוגע להספרות בשביל בתו תחי' הנה נשלחו ונשלחים גם עתה למחנם ע"י הלשכה או ועד הסניפי מכל מה שהו"ל במרכזנו ובהם נמצא גם המתאים להנ"ל ומובן שעל סתם ספרים א"א לחוו"ד מכאן עד שנראה אותם ונבחנם,

אבל מכיון שנגע בשאלה זו הנה אין העיקר תקנת הטפל (ס' קריאה או גם ספרי למוד) אף שכמובן ג"ז חשוב למדי אם מזניחים (איני רוצה להשתמש בבטוי מכאיב יותר). תקנת העיקר היינו מוסד הלמוד והסביבה אשר שם, גם אם נכון הדבר שאין לע"ע כתה מתאמת בשבילה באחד מוסדות החנוך הכשרים מפני מה אינו משתדל שתתיסד כתה כזו. האם התחילו ולא הצליח. ואם א"א בשו"א מפני מה לא תהי' [ב]תור מורה או מחנכת בבית חנוך אשר עטה"ק הרי אין זה שאלה של כתה מתאמת בשביל כשרונותי' באחד או באחדים מהמדעים אלא שאלה של סביבה מתאמת בשביל שתשאר בתוקף יהדותה ותקופת המעבר הן בגילה בפרט הן מסדר החיים במדינתנו מלפנים לסדה"ח באירופה בכלל נוגע בזה ביותר, ומה שכותב שיש לו מזה עגמ"נ הנה בטח ידוע לו פתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א בשם כ"ק אדנ"ע טובה פעולה אחת מאלף אנחות.

לקחתי לעצמי רשות להאריך בכ"ז במקצת... אף שלא עשיתי זה ע"ע כי לא נתן לי ע"ע פתח דברים להכנס בנדו"ז, ועכ"פ אתו הסליחה על התערבותי בזה.
