Igrot Kodesh · Letter 399 — 18 Elul Fascicle and Rosh Hashana Calendar Teaching
Volume 2 · Letter 234
By the grace of Hashem*,
20 Elul 5708,
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav A.[1],
I greet you and bless you,
You will find enclosed the fascicle that my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita, asked to be published on the occasion of 18 Elul*. It is certain — and there is no doubt — that you will make it widely available. Moreover, the word Bevadai (certainly) is formed by the initials of the verse 'And David blessed Hashem,' as explained in the Siddur* of the Ari Zal*[2], and doubt — Safek* — has the same numerical value (gematria*) as Amalek*, which must be erased.
I will touch on a matter connected to the present season. The Rambam* says: 'Why cannot Rosh Hashana* fall on Sunday, Wednesday, or Friday? Because certain days were adopted for this festival and others were set aside.' However, he does not explain why precisely these three days were excluded, while Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Shabbat* were retained — and the Ra'avad* himself raises this objection.
According to Rabbenu Chananel* on the tractate Shabbat*, the Rabbi considers that the impossibility of these three days being Rosh Hashana* is a principle transmitted to Moses at Sinai[3]. The Ramaz*, however, offers a kabbalistic* explanation.
For the first day of Rosh Hashana* is that of strict judgment. It can therefore not fall on Sunday, the first day of creation — that of the Attribute of Kindness — nor on Wednesday, which corresponds to the Attribute of Eternity, likewise linked to Kindness. Now, two excluded days cannot be consecutive, and so only Friday was left to be set aside.
But it is more satisfying to explain that Friday is connected to the Attribute of Foundation — Yesod* — which softens severity. That is why it was declared 'good' twice during creation. Hashem even defined it the second time as 'very good,' and our Sages explain: 'He is thereby alluding to King Mashiach*,' after severity has been softened. The second 'good' was said after the creation of man, and that is why the very first Rosh Hashana* — which began therefore before man appeared — could fall on a Friday. This idea will not be elaborated further here.
Our Sages say in the tractate Pesachim 54 that the word 'good' was not said on the second day of creation, because that was when the fire of Gehinom* was created. That term was therefore reintroduced on Friday. The Maharya Chaver* says on this: 'Monday represents strict judgment, counterbalanced by the kindness revealed through circumcision[4]. That is why the word 'good' was reintroduced on Friday.'
This will allow us to answer another question. The Rambam* surely had good reason to exclude precisely those three days, as the Ra'avad* indicates. Why, then, did he not state it?
This can be understood if we adopt the explanation just given. The Sefer HaSichot* of the summer 5700[5], citing the Baal Shem Tov*, says that the Rambam* was versed in Kabbalah*. You will consult the commentary I give on this matter. Nevertheless, he did not wish to reveal it, not even by allusion, on account of the danger that arose from doing so in his era.
With my blessing that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year, together with all your disciples,
Rav Menachem Schneerson
