To the directors of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* in Lod*, may Hashem* grant you long life,
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letters of 21 and 24 Kislev*, with their enclosures. You ask me whether an additional name should be added to the yeshivah*, besides the name it already bears — Tomchei Temimim* or Achei Temimim*.
These names, which are essential, were chosen by our holy masters. Now, there are dozens of yeshivos* and one has never heard of an additional name being appended to the one they bear. I therefore do not understand why this person (presumably a donor named Yisrael) should be the first to contemplate such a change.
Moreover, the name Yisrael can be given to other things — to books, to a building. In fact, according to the revealed dimension of the Torah*, when one adds a second name, one does not retain the first and second independently, but rather combines the two to form a new name. This can be deduced from what is said regarding the names of a daughter-in-law and a mother-in-law (who may not share the same given name; but if one of them possesses an additional given name, nothing need be modified), in the Responsa of the Tzemach Tzedek*, Even HaEzer, end of the first section.

במענה על מכתביהם מכ"א וכ"ד כסלו עם המוסגר בהם...אם יש לצרף עוד שם להשם הנקרא תו"ת או אחי תמימים.
הרי כיון ששמות אלו העיקרים נקבעו ע"י נשיאנו הק' ולמרות שנמצאו כבר עשיריות ישיבות, לא נשמע עוד אף במקום אחד שיצרפו עוד שמות, תמיהני למה לפב"פ להיות המתחיל בשינוי זה, ובפרט שהרי אפשר לקרות השם, ישראל, על איזה ענינים אחרים, כמו על הספרים או הבנין וכיו"ב, וביחוד שהרי ידוע ג"כ ע"פ נגלה שצירוף שני שמות על נושא אחד, אין הענין שכל אחד מהם נשאר גם בפני עצמו, אלא ששניהם יחד מהווים שם חדש (כדמוכח גם מענין השמות דכלה וחמותה המובא בשו"ת צמח צדק אבה"ע סוף חלק א).
