Igrot Kodesh · Letter 404 — Custom of Reciting a Personal Verse After Amidah

Volume 2 · Letter 239

By the grace of Hashem,

Erev Rosh Hashana 5709,

To the distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem,

Rav Z.,

I greet you and bless you,

You have doubtless received my letter, accompanied by the fascicle published on the occasion of 18 Elul. Please be so kind as to confirm this.

As this year draws to a close, I found in my notes an unanswered question from you. Here it is. Rashi*, commenting on the verse Micah 6:9, says: 'One who reads every day a verse whose first and last letters are the same as those of his name will be saved from Gehinnom*.' You ask me about the meaning of this commentary.

It alludes to the custom, mentioned in several Siddurim* and which is also a Chabad* custom, of reading such a verse each day. We read it, however, at the end of the paragraph Elokai Netzor*, which is at the end of the Amidah*, meaning that we repeat it several times each day.

For now, I have been able to verify that this practice[1] is recorded by the Zehira*, the Siddur Avodat Yisrael* of Ber — which states that it applies to women as well — and the Siddur Nehora HaShalem*, but not in the Shnei Luchot HaBrit* or its abridgement, nor in the Yaabetz*, although some cite these references.

Concretely, I asked my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita. He told me that as a student, when he was learning to pray, his father, the Rebbe*[2], asked him to insert, each day and in each prayer, the verses corresponding to his name.

Moreover, it seems to me that some raise the question of whether what is printed in parentheses in Rashi's commentary is his own words or was added later. Indeed, this practice is not mentioned by the early Sages, nor by Rashi's students.

I have seen that in the Torah printed in Amsterdam in 5460[3], explanations of Rabbi Ovadya the Prophet* were introduced into Rashi's commentary, as stated in the introduction to that work. But I do not have access to it and cannot therefore verify this. Perhaps the same is true of Rashi's commentary on the book of Micah.

I leave you wishing you to be inscribed and sealed for a good year, together with your entire community,

M. Schneerson,

My letter was delayed until the day after Rosh Hashana* and I therefore enclose the text of three chassidic discourses*. Please confirm their receipt. They are intended for your entire community, as we had agreed.

Be definitively inscribed for a good year,

M. S.
