To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, of manifold accomplishments for the Torah* and mitzvos*, devoted to communal needs, Rav Shimshon Raphael shlita*,

Greetings and blessings,

You inform me that your son Yisrael Meir, whom Hashem* should grant long life, is celebrating his Bar Mitzvah*.

May Hashem* grant that he bear the yoke of the Heavenly Kingdom, of the Torah* and the mitzvos*, always and every day.

You know why we use the term "yoke" in this regard. Indeed, one must fulfill the Torah* and mitzvos* as an accomplishment that transcends reason. It is only in this way that one can observe them in the proper manner.

You and your wife will derive from him true satisfaction — that is, Jewish satisfaction. The merit of your work to strengthen and disseminate Judaism will expand the blessing of Hashem* in all that has been said, materially and spiritually alike.

With respect and blessing.

With your permission, I will make a remark about the invitation card (to the Bar Mitzvah*, which was sent to me), although it has already been distributed. It was written in Ashuris* script, and the letters even bear the ornamental crowns (as in a Sefer Torah*). Now, the Sages of the earlier and later generations had great difficulty permitting the everyday use of the square script (which is nonetheless of a lower sanctity than Ashuris* script). And in any event, one endeavors to modify the Ashuris* script (for uses that do not directly belong to the realm of holiness*) from what it is in the Sefer Torah*, tefillin*, and mezuzos*.

It is surely unnecessary to say more to someone like you. This question is discussed in Yoreh De'ah*, at the end of chapter 284; the Gilyon Maharsha*, at the same reference; and in particular in the Responsa Tzur Yaakov, end of chapter 2, or even earlier, in the Responsa of the Rambam*, cited by the Beis Yosef*, chapter 283, and the Responsa of the Radbaz*, volumes 3 and 4.

(Rav S. R. Weiss; see, regarding him, letter no. 3630. See also, regarding Ashuris script on invitations, letter no. 3732.)
