25 Teves* 5716

Brooklyn

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 5 Teves*, which follows, as you yourself state, your previous correspondence written a year and a half ago. During this time, you were able — and therefore obligated — to experience elevation in the study of Chassidus*, in the practice of its customs and ways. I searched for these details, or at least a brief description of them, in the four pages of your letter. I did not find a single allusion to any of this. You merely pose yet more questions.

I am surprised by your attitude, for you are a Jew who is aware that the Torah* was given because the Children of Israel proclaimed: "We will do and (then) we will understand." More broadly, the Mishnah* in Tractate Berachos*, beginning of the second chapter, emphasizes that a Jew carries out all that he undertakes by placing submission first. Yet it appears that you have adopted the opposite approach — posing one question after another. As soon as you receive answers to the previous questions, you search for new ones.

I have granted you mitigating circumstances, telling myself that in the interval between your two letters, you studied Chassidus* deeply and applied its teachings to yourself personally. You also studied the revealed dimension of the Torah*, and it is said that "great is study that leads to action." Nevertheless, you are particularly modest and therefore do not wish to boast about it.

But if that were indeed the case, you should have at least alluded to it in your letter, and above all, your questions should have been formulated differently. In such a case, your introduction — stating that your questions are neither a challenge nor an attack — would have been unnecessary. Your manner of writing would have proven it. Moreover, before formulating these questions in writing, you would have researched references that might have shown you that they do not even arise.

In any event, I am not freed from doubt. I will therefore respond briefly to the questions that have practical implications:

A) The discourses of the masters of Chabad* provide certain details about the periods prior to Chassidus* that are not mentioned in other books. It appears that you draw frightful conclusions from this. Most of the questions one might raise in this matter stem from a lack of knowledge. Were that not the case, you would know that in this domain, the first book published is the Shivchei HaBaal Shem Tov*, essentially based on the statements of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, as explained in the introduction to that work. But this point will not be elaborated upon here.

B) Concerning the Siddur*, you ask me how the text of the prayer could have been changed and how modifications are conceivable in a Siddur* on whose title page it is written: "According to the rite of the Arizal*."

You should consult, on this subject, the introduction of the Sha'ar HaKollel*, which relates the history of the Siddur's* publication. It was printed by men, about whom it is said: "Who can discern errors?" There were therefore printing errors from the very first edition. Already in the time of the Alter Rebbe*, a list of corrections was drawn up, and from time to time verifications were made based on the tradition received by the Chassidim*.

C) You also ask me about the measurements of the Torah*.

In the book of the great Rav Chaim Na'eh*, several of these measurements are cited. It is also specified whether they are established on the basis of logic or whether they emanate from a tradition of the Chassidim*.

D) Concerning your third and fourth questions, I do not see what bearing they have on your study of Torah* and your practice of mitzvos*. It is therefore a pity that you waste time delving into matters that have nothing to do with the mission entrusted to each one of us — namely, in the words of the Mishnah*: "I was created to serve my Creator."

With blessing to convey good tidings of yourself,

On behalf of the Rebbe shlita*,

the secretary
