Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter from the eve of Shabbos* Parshas* Vayigash*, which followed a particularly long silence. I find in it no explanation for this interruption, nor for the brevity of your letter. No doubt your upcoming letters will be detailed. You will describe to me, in particular, the Chassidic farbrengens* of the auspicious days of the month of Kislev* — among the Chassidim*, among the wives of the Chassidim*, and among the students. You will also send me newspaper clippings, in keeping with the fine habit that has always been yours.

According to various texts of Chassidus*, including the discourse (the maamar* entitled "These Are the Names," in Sefer HaMaamarim* 5716, p. 424) that was delivered the day before yesterday, during Shabbos*, the Divinity that each creature carries within itself has two opposite characteristics: elevation on the one hand, and closeness — revelation in space, disclosure — on the other. For Hashem willed to create each being and to grant it elevation.

These two opposite characteristics also reveal themselves in the Attribute of Divine Royalty, Malchus*. On the one hand, it is known that "there is no king without a people" (which corresponds to closeness), and on the other hand, it is said that "you must fear Him" (thus feeling His elevation). And this Attribute reveals itself in space, since Hashem wishes to reign over these creatures and issue Decrees regarding them.

How much more must this be the case for earthly royalty, since it is said: "Who are the kings? They are the Sages." One who is charged with collecting funds for institutions, or more generally, a Chassid*, an emissary of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, must carry out his mission in every place to which he is led by Divine Providence*.

Now, closeness and disclosure are positive only when they accompany elevation and even separation. One must know, however, that the latter is not the ultimate purpose, and according to a well-known saying, "the complaint of settled people (those comfortable with themselves who merely complain without being animated by a genuine desire to change) is repulsive." For all that, elevation and, all the more so, separation that are not accompanied by disclosure are also not positive.

It appears that among certain Chassidim* — yourself included — this sentiment dominates toward the Jews of that city (from whom they seek to separate). This has an effect on the manner in which the wellsprings — namely, the teachings of Chassidus*, its customs and practices — are disseminated outward. These wellsprings do not reach all the places where they can and must arrive.

I saw an example of this last week, when a certain person from that city visited me. We had a lengthy conversation and this man gave me the impression of being Orthodox, one who fears Hashem. His wife does not obstruct his observance; on the contrary, she assists him in all of it. Yet it appears that he has never contributed to any Chabad* activity. It goes without saying that no one has even tried to draw him in.

He reminded me of another person who is in the same situation and whom very little has been done to convince, for the time being. I am very much afraid that the reason is what I described above. Various texts explain that one who influences others must evaluate the means and capacities of the one receiving the influence. If you apply the proper reflection, you will ensure that your influence is fully received.

May Hashem grant that you act in this manner regarding all the Jews of your country and, in particular, of your city. May Hashem grant you success.

I could have cited other examples of people who have not been drawn in appropriately, even though they are very close. But the one I have given will suffice. Obviously, you may share all of this with the other Chassidim*, for each of them must be "a candle to illuminate." This mission therefore falls upon you as well.

Awaiting your good tidings regarding all that has been said,
