To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Yehoshua Shneur Zalman (Rav Y. Sh. Z. Serebrianski of Melbourne, Australia; see letters no. 3093 and 4269),
Greetings and blessings,
A) I am surprised that you say nothing about the Chassidic farbrengen* of 19 Kislev* (see the previous letter), from which you surely benefited in all that concerns the Yeshivah*.
B) You mention the pros and cons in determining whether it is appropriate to punish students for lateness (at the Yeshivah* Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak* Lubavitch* of Melbourne).
Obviously, everything depends on the nature of these students, and not all are the same in this regard. Some are late without wanting to be, while others act deliberately, and there are also all the intermediate cases between these two extremes.
There are, in this matter, two great principles: Obedience and order must be upheld. However, one must not drive students away from the Yeshivah*. In certain cases, what cannot be changed must therefore be incorporated into the structure. For example, one can form a class for those who arrive at a certain hour due to the distance of their home.
C) You tell me that in one of the classes there are students with very different capabilities. Yet it is difficult to divide it into two, since the class has only few students.
This problem is encountered in every school, for it is impossible to have, in each class, a single level of capability. The administration on the ground must therefore find a middle path, so that the classes are not too small and so that students are not lost. It is impossible, in this matter, to establish immutable principles. The situation changes from one period to another, and the conditions of the locale must also be taken into account.
D) The Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Moshe Cantor, is considering enrolling his son for one year at the Yeshivah* Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak* Lubavitch*. I am pleased by this. This will be much more beneficial to him than he imagines. Logic enables one to establish this — especially if one reflects on the fact that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, and after whom the school is named, elicits blessing and success in all that pertains to this school.
One who reflects on the history of Yeshivah* Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak* Lubavitch* of Melbourne will need no further proofs. You should therefore think about that brief period that was its beginning, and it is said that "all beginnings are difficult." Thus you will envision what the future holds.
Fortunate are all those who will participate in this endeavor and who will receive their education within this sacred institution. Obviously, you may convey all of this to Rav M. Cantor. And given the obligation to love one's fellow, not only may you do so, but moreover, you must. May Hashem grant that Rav M. C. serve as an example to other parents and that this example be emulated.
E) I will mention the name you conveyed to me at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, so that this young man have a speedy and complete recovery. His parents will educate him to Torah*, the marriage canopy, and good deeds.
It would be advisable to verify, in an appropriate manner, whether his parents observed the laws and principles of family purity* (at the time of the conception of this child). If this was not fully the case, which Hashem forbid, they should commit to doing so in the future, and they should influence those around them in this area — for this is, in a certain way, a means of regretting what has occurred.
With blessing to convey good tidings of all the above, and with greetings to all the Chassidim*.
P.S.: In the letter you wrote to me previously, you described the efforts of the Chassidim* on behalf of the Yeshivah*. But you mention only those who reside in Melbourne. One should therefore approach those in Sydney, and perhaps there are also some in other places.
For the Yeshivah* Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak* Lubavitch* will illuminate the entire country. Those who are connected to Lubavitch* or simply in contact with this movement have therefore the obligation and the merit to make such an effort, to strengthen it and to develop it to the fullest extent possible.
Without a doubt, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, will intercede on their behalf in all that they need, materially and spiritually, as well as for the members of their families.
