Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter and I thank you for informing me that this person is feeling better. You also mention your spiritual state and share your dissatisfaction, your concern.

You should therefore apply the following kal vachomer* reasoning: Physical health does not depend on man, but on Hashem. Despite this, a person must do what is in his power through natural means and also through spiritual means. How much more is this the case regarding spirituality, which depends entirely on man.

Our Sages observe that "everything is in the hands of Heaven except for the fear of Heaven" and "the result is commensurate with the effort" (literally: "The mark on the camel's back corresponds to the weight of the burden"). Hashem demands only in accordance with the strength that each person possesses, and it was personally said to each individual: "I am Hashem your Elokim." The same applies to the entire Torah* and the mitzvos* (which were also given individually to each person). It is therefore perfectly clear that everything depends on you. If you make an effort in accordance with what is expected of you, you will discover the good, and "there is no good but Torah and mitzvos*."

To obtain the help of Hashem in all of this, you should observe the ritual immersion according to Ezra* (after each conjugal relation), as well as the three studies that concern each individual, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. These pertain to Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya* and are well known. You should also give a coin to tzedakah* before the morning prayer, during the weekdays.

במענה על מכתבו. ת"ח על הבשורה טובה מהטבת בריאות... שי'. ובמה שכותב וממשיך בהנוגע למצבו הרוחני, שמתאונן עליו ודואג ביותר וכו'.

הנה ישא בעצמו קל וחומר מהנ"ל, ומה ברפואת בריאות הגוף שמצד עצמו אינו תלוי בבני אדם, אלא בהקדוש ברוך הוא, בכל זה צריך האדם להשתדל בדרכי הטבע ולהשתדל בענינים רוחנים, על אחת כמה וכמה בהנוגע לענינים רוחנים שתלוים לגמרי בהאדם, וכמאמר רז"ל הכל בידי שמים חוץ מיראת שמים, ולפום גמלא שיחנא, ואין הקדוש ברוך הוא מבקש אלא לפי כחן, ולכל אחד ואחד נאמר אנכי ה' אלקיך וגו' וכן כל התורה ומצותי', שמזה מובן ופשוט שאין הדבר תלוי אלא בו, ואם ייגע כפי המוטל עליו הרי ימצא טוב ואין טוב אלא תורה ומצוה.

ולסייעתא דשמיא בכל האמור, הנה יהי' זהיר בטבילת עזרא, בשלשת השיעורים השוים לכל נפש מתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים, ובנתינת פרוטה לצדקה קודם תפלת הבקר בימות החול.
