Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 8 Teves*, with its contents. Your request for a blessing will be read, at an auspicious moment, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us.

You are considering having your son continue his studies in Montreal, Canada. This is, in general, a good proposal. You must, however, explain to him the ruling of our holy Torah*, according to which one may leave the Holy Land and travel to the rest of the world only in order to marry or to study Torah*.

Consequently, I say that this proposal is good and that his father and brothers-in-law should endeavor to bring it about — but only insofar as this condition is met. If it is not satisfied, which Hashem forbid — if it is not evident that his Torah* study has intensified in that country compared to what it was in the Holy Land — my agreement is withdrawn, along with the efforts invested in realizing all of this. You must understand what I mean.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מח' טבת עם המוסגר בו, והפ"נ שיקרא בעת רצון על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע.

ובמ"ש אודות שיסע בנו... שי' ללמוד במאנטרעאל-קנדה בכלל נכונה הסברא... מוכרח שיסביר לו פסק תוה"ק אשר אסור לצאת מא"י לחו"ל כי אם לישא אשה ולתלמוד תורה, ולכן מה שכותב הנני שנכונה הסברא וכן מה שאביו וגיסיו שי' משתדלים בזה, הוא רק ע"פ היתר הנ"ל, ואם ח"ו יחסר, היינו שלא יהי' תוספת ניכרת בתלמוד תורה בחוץ לארץ על הת"ת שלו, - באה"ק ת"ו, הנה בטלה ההסכמה וההשתדלות וכו' וד"ל...
