To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Raphael Nachman HaCohen (Rav R. N. Kahn of Tel Aviv; see letter no. 3909),

Greetings and blessings,

I thank you for your letter from the fourth candle (of Chanukah*), in which you describe the Chassidic farbrengens* that took place during the auspicious and favorable days — that is, during the month of Kislev*, the month of the liberation (of the Alter Rebbe* from the tsarist prisons). Admittedly, you have this time written very briefly, but no doubt you will fill in all the details at the next opportunity. You will tell me, in particular, about the gathering with the students of the Yeshivos*.

It is surely unnecessary to remind you that a Chassidic farbrengen* enables one to plow and to plant. One must therefore, subsequently, continue the effort until the fruits develop, growing in a positive manner, both quantitatively and qualitatively. You will no doubt understand the meaning of this metaphor.

You tell me that you will send a certain Rav some of our publications in order to acquaint him with Chabad*. It is evident that this initiative is particularly wise. It is also a means of disseminating the wellsprings of Chassidus*, or at the very least of preparing this dissemination. You should therefore consult together to determine which books are best suited to the nature of this Rav. You will convey all of this here, and your request will, of course, be granted.

On this occasion, it will be necessary to verify whether he himself has published books or writings, in which case an exchange would be possible. This has, moreover, an additional advantage — conferring value upon these books in the eyes of the one who receives them, since he did not obtain them for free, similar to the principle that "the doctor protects..." You must understand what I mean.

With blessing to convey good tidings of all the above, and to derive, together with your wife, satisfaction from all your children,

ת"ח על מכתבו מנר הרביעי, בו כותב אודות ההתועדויות דימי הסגולה והרצון הוא חדש כסלו חדש הגאולה, ואף כי הפעם כותב בקיצור, הנה בטח ימלא בהזדמנות הבאה ובפרט אודות ההתועדות עם תלמידי הישיבות, ובטח למותר לעורר אשר התועדות עושה פעולת החרישה והזריעה ודרוש גם אח"כ טפול עד שיצמחו הפירות ויהיו גדלים בהפלגה הן בכמות והן באיכות, והנמשל מובן.

במ"ש שישלחו לרב פלוני מענינים הנדפסים בכדי להכירו עם שיטת חב"ד וכו', בודאי נכון הדבר ובמאד, והרי זהו גם נכנס בכלל הפצת המעיינות חוצה עכ"פ בתור הכשרה לזה, וצריך הי' להתייעץ ביניהם איזה ספרים מתאימים למהותו של הנ"ל ולהודיע לכאן, ובטח ימלאו בקשתם.

בהזדמנות זו יש להתענין ג"כ אם הו"ל הנ"ל איזה ספרים וחוברות, שאז הרי יש מקום לחילוף, שיש בזה עוד מעלה שהדבר יקר בעיני המקבל כיון שלא ניתנו לו חנם ואסיא דמגן כו' וד"ל.

בברכה לבשר טוב בכל האמור ולנחת חסידותי ביחד עם זוגתו מכל יו"ח שיחיו.
