I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 20 Shevat, in which you tell me that you lack enthusiasm in your studies.

This is merely a stratagem of the evil inclination*, seeking to divert a person from the service of the Creator. One must therefore not engage it in dialogue, but on the contrary, become angry with it, as the Tanya* explains at length.

You will therefore intensify your study of the revealed part of the Torah* and of Chassidus*, even if it seems to you that you lack enthusiasm. Our Sages speak, indeed, of the "yoke" of the Torah* and affirm that effort is crowned with success. In a short time, you will be able to verify that this was merely a test.

You ask me how to make amends. For this, you will increase your words of Torah* and of prayer. You will engrave in your mind several chapters of the Tanya*, of the Mishnah*, and the Chassidic* discourse entitled "You shall honor the elder," which is found in the Likkutei Torah*, at the end of Parshas* Kedoshim. You will forget what has happened and you will not even think about rectification during the coming years.

And you will influence those around you, to draw them closer to the Torah*, the mitzvos*, and the luminary of the Torah* — the teachings of Chassidus*, its customs, and its practices.

You inform me of your birthday. No doubt, on this occasion, you adopted the customs recently introduced by the Chassidim*. May Hashem* grant you a year of success in all your needs.

במענה על מכתבו מכ' שבט, בו כותב שאין לו חיות בלימוד וכו'.

הנה אין זה אלא מתחבולות היצר המבלבל את האדם מעבודת הבורא, ואל יכנס עמו בשקלא וטריא כי אם ירגיז עליו וכמבואר בתניא באריכות ויוסיף בלימוד הנגלה ובלימוד החסידות, ואף אם נדמה לו שאין לו חיות בזה, הרי ידוע דיוק לשון רז"ל עול תורה, יגעת ומצאת ובמשך זמן לא ארוך יראה אשר אין זה אלא נסיון.

ובמ"ש אודות תיקון. - ירבה באותיות התורה והתפלה ויהיו חקוקים בזכרונו איזה פרקים תניא ואיזה פרקים משניות והמאמר והדרת פני זקן בלקו"ת סוף פרשת קדושים, ויסיח דעת מהענין ואפילו מתיקונו במשך שנים הקרובות, וישפיע על הזולת לקרבם לתורה ולמצותי' ולמאור שבתורה זוהי תורת החסידות הדרכותי' ומנהגי'.

ולהודעתו מיום ההולדת שלו, בודאי נהג בו במנהגי אנ"ש דזמן האחרון, והשי"ת יתן לו שנת הצלחה בהמצטרך לו.
