I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 25 Shevat, in which you tell me that you are pursuing your studies in one of the branches of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* and you wish to transfer to that of Lod. You ask me whether you should do as you desire or not.

It is clear that such a formulation constitutes, for me, something novel. I have never heard a Yeshivah* student in general, and a student of Tomchei Temimim* in particular, ask whether he should do what he desires. Indeed, his goal is to elevate himself in the fear of Hashem*, to study the revealed and hidden parts of the Torah*, to fulfill the mitzvos* in the best way — and not to do what he desires. The fact that this might be the case here no doubt explains your second question, regarding the bad thoughts that trouble you during your studies.

The best solution in both of these areas, and the final answer to these questions, is to accept upon oneself the yoke of Divine Kingship, the yoke of the Torah* and the mitzvos*. Indeed, our Sages note that it is precisely in these domains that the term "yoke" is employed.

You will therefore comply with the opinion of your teacher, the dean of the Yeshivah*, and the mashpia* who teaches you Chassidus*. You will present all your thoughts to them, and subsequently you will do what they indicate. You know, indeed, that one must say: "We will do and we will understand" — and it was precisely in this way that the Torah* was received, even if it may seem that one has an intellectual approach to it. Obviously, this is the beginning and the foundation of the service of Hashem*.

Moreover, you allude to foreign thoughts. Forget them through other thoughts, without waging war against them, without engaging them in dialogue. Invest your power of thought in a positive idea connected to the fear of Hashem*, to the Torah*, to the mitzvos*. If this is too difficult for you, concentrate your thought on a written text that you will consult. In this way, you will more easily chase away these bad thoughts.

You surely observe the three studies that concern everyone, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. These deal with the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*, and are well known. And you know by heart several chapters of the Tanya* and of the Mishnah*, which you review.

With my blessing,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,
