To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*

and has fine conduct, Rav Yitzchak Aizik (Rav I. A. Small),

I greet you and bless you,

I heard news of you with pleasure from the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, of many accomplishments, Rav Shlomo Zalman Hecht (of Chicago, see letters no. 3930 and 4024). As he requested, I will mention your name and those of the members of your family near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us.

I know what relationship you maintain with what concerns Lubavitch and Chabad*. Furthermore, our Sages say that there is always elevation in the domain of holiness. Now, is there any greater holiness than regarding Jews in a positive light? Is this not the great principle of the Torah*, as Rabbi Akiva says, commenting on the verse "Love your fellow as yourself"? Consequently, I have good hope that you will strengthen this relationship.

Moreover, there will soon be in your city the discussions and allocation (of grants) of funds for rescue. On this occasion, your good thought will surely be linked to action, all the more so since the need for this aid is increasingly urgent, as you know. It has even been expressed by the newspapers, which are beginning to take interest in the situation of hundreds of thousands of Jews of Sephardic origin.

In this connection, I recall the following saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, which he uttered upon his arrival in the United States for the second time (in 1940, in order to settle there): "Generally, one does not like competition and plagiarism. However, the Lubavitch conception in general, and mine in particular, is the wish that the greatest number also intervene in my domains of action, in the way in which I do so myself."

It is extraordinary to observe, in this action as in various facets of the achievements of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, the identity with the leaders of Israel of our era. In the words of the Tikkunei Zohar*, a leader of Israel is "an extension of Moshe." Yehoshua, his servant, himself "did not depart from his tent." Despite this, he said (of those who spoke against Moshe): "Imprison them" — or, at least, according to the interpretation of our Sages: "Impose communal responsibilities upon them" (which has the effect of restraining the harvest, as our Sages explain). Immediately, the faithful shepherd of Israel responded: "Would that all the people of Hashem* were prophets, if Hashem* were to bestow His spirit upon them."

In this way, Moshe did not merely express the wish that everything happen precisely in the manner that had previously been indicated by Hashem* Himself: "I will take from the spirit that is upon you and place it upon them" (upon the seventy elders, not upon the entire people). He personally directed his spirit toward them (toward the entire people).

I thank you once more for everything you will do to allocate a grant to our action, as previously defined, in the largest possible proportion.

With my blessing,
