Igrot Kodesh · Letter 431 — Chanukah Meditation on Anointing Oil and the Liberation of 19 Kislev

To my friend, the chassid*, the renowned scholar, Rav Shneur Zalman Duchman*[1], may he live long and well.

I received your letters numbered 5 and 6. The Kuntres He'chaltz* was already sent previously. Sent separately last week: the chassidic discourse* 'You stand today together'[2] (14 Iyar 5708, for Pesach Sheni*[5]).

I do not have the discourses of 19 and 20 Kislev 5673[3] nor other discourses of the Rebbe Rashab*[4], apart from those contained in Torat Shalom* — please send them.

I await the continuation of your notes.

A Torah thought in connection with today's Torah reading[6]: At the end of Parshat Nasso*, Likkutei Torah* explains that the inauguration of the Sanctuary* was performed with anointing oil and then thereafter. The anointing oil represents an intermediate stage between or makkif* (surrounding light*) and or penimi* (inner light*). In Torah, the oil alludes to Chabad* Chassidut* as it was revealed after Petersburg[7] — the liberation of 19 Kislev 5559 (1799); before that it was in a state of 'burning'[8], the world not yet being ready.

The discourse of 19 Kislev 5664[9] (1903, by the Rebbe Rashab), in Torat Shalom p.42[10], links this theme to Chanukah and to 19 Kislev.
