Igrot Kodesh · Letter 444 — Halachic Basis of Talmud Distribution

I just received your letter of 5 Shevat.* You suggest that the cantor can fulfill the obligation for those who cannot read, since 'one who hears is like one who reads himself.' This is incorrect — the cantor[2] also fulfills the obligation for those working in the fields who cannot hear[4] him. Furthermore, this has no bearing on the Talmud* distribution program[5] — how can those working in the fields receive the reward?[6] That is, if one can receive credit merely by listening without actual learning, how does the Talmud distribution work when participants do not even hear one another?

זה עתה נתקבל מכ' מה' שבט, ומש"כ דבקי מוציא כו' מפני דשומע

כעונה - לכאורה אינו דהרי מוציא גם עם שבשדות, ואינו דאינו שייך חלוקת הש"ס דתימא הוא לומר שגם עם שבשדות יקחו חלק בשכר.
