To the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yaakov Menachem Mendel (see note 1) HaCohen, the shochet*,
Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your undated letter, which followed a particularly long silence. You tell me how you have begun to spread Jewish practice in your surroundings. You inform me of the difficulties you are facing.
With appropriate reflection, you will succeed in removing these obstacles, in spreading Yiddishkeit* in accordance with Chassidic directives, and, when the time comes, the wellsprings of Chassidus*. Moreover, the season (see note 2) is approaching and people from various places gather near you (see note 3). The influence exerted on them will subsequently spread to many places and circles (see note 4).
May Hashem grant that you succeed in this, in the best possible way. And you know the saying (see note 5) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, that a shochet* is not merely someone who holds a knife in his hand. And it has been said many times (see note 6), during chassidic farbrengens*, that the definition of shechitah* can be found in the teaching given in the academy of Rabbi Yishmael, according to which shechitah* is a means of drawing close. One must therefore draw the animal and elevate it toward the human.
Thus, the animal soul* found within a person here below, and this person himself, of whom it is said, "I am as animals before You," will be elevated toward the Supernal Man. This is self-evident.
With my blessing, in the formulation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, for a healthy summer — that this good health be both physical and spiritual, one depending on the other,

לאחרי שתיקתו הכי ארוכה, מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו - מבלי הוראת זמן הכתיבה - בו כותב אודות אופן התחלתו לעסוק בהפצת היהדות בסביבתו, והמניעות שחלו בזה, ובודאי בהתבוננות המתאימה יש למצוא אופן להסיר המניעות ולעשות בהפצת היהדות בכלל ובהדרכות חסידיות, ובמשך הזמן גם בהפצת תורת החסידות.
ובפרט שמתקרב הסעזאן שאז מתקבצים אנשים מכמה מקומות בסביבתו, ופעולה עליהם מתפשטת אח"כ לכמה מקומות וחוגים, ויה"ר שיצליח בזה ובמדה הכי גדולה, וכבר נודע פתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר אז א שוחט איז ניט קיין סקאטאבאיעץ וכו' וכבר נאמר כ"פ בעת התועדות, שענין השחיטה הוא כמרז"ל תנדבר"י, אין ושחט אלא ומשך - להמשיך את הבהמה ולעשותה אדם, את הנה"ב במדריגת אדם התחתון ואדם התחתון אשר עליו נאמר בהמות הייתי עמך, כאדם העליון, וק"ל...
