To the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem, devotes himself to communal needs, and has good conduct, Rav Uriel (see note 1),
Greetings and blessings,
Your silence — apart from your telegram — since you departed from here was causing me concern. I therefore received your letter of Isru Chag* (see note 2) with pleasure. Naturally, I read its contents with mixed feelings.
On the one hand, you describe the situation, presumably as it is, without seeking to embellish it. You tell me what the reactions are, and indeed I have repeatedly requested that the descriptions given to me be accurate. For not knowing causes much more distress than receiving news that is unpleasant but corresponds to reality.
On the other hand, what you write truly pains me. It is surely unnecessary to reiterate once more my request to know everything that is happening, with as many details as possible.
Naturally, what is said in your letter, as well as in this one, in no way diminishes the request I made — that you visit certain individuals and circles in order to disseminate the study of Chassidus* (see note 3). As I told you when you were here, the point is to present its teaching as a part of our holy Torah*. In our era, this study and teaching are not only a mitzvah* but also an obligation, an absolute necessity.
In practice, one can observe that this study transforms the study of the other parts of the Torah*, as well as the observance of the mitzvos*. There is no need to say more, so evident is this to one who observes the situation without any partiality. This is quite clear.
In general, the mission of man is divided between two directions: "turn away from evil" and "do good." Certainly, the Tikkunei Zohar* associates the three hundred and sixty-five Prohibitions with the first half of the Name of Hashem, the letters Yud* and Hei*, while the two hundred and forty-eight Injunctions pertain to the letters Vav* and Hei* of this Name. The Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Pekudei, and other texts explain this at length.
Nevertheless, even if the worlds had not been created, the Prohibitions would still apply (see note 4). Creation therefore introduced a new element, justifying the descent of the soul into this world below — "from a lofty summit to a deep pit" — the active performance of the Injunctions, concrete accomplishments. The revealed part of the Torah* establishes that this is so, since, according to an established principle, the performance of an Injunction overrides a Prohibition. You must understand what I mean.
You say nothing about your wife. This surely means that everything went well during her journey and upon her arrival in the Holy Land. No doubt she has established contact with the Nshei* and Bnos* Chabad* organizations. She will take advantage of her visit (see note 5) for this as well, to the fullest extent possible.
I await your detailed letters regarding all this, and I send you my blessing that your trip and your visit here be particularly effective — in order to raise the fortunes of the Tradition of Israel in general and the dissemination of the wellsprings (see note 6) in particular.
With my blessing for good news,
P.S.: The yeshivah* for the study of Kabbalah* that we discussed, and for which I asked you to determine the study program, is the Yeshivah* Zichron Shimon, in the holy city of Yerushalayim*, at the address of Rav Aharon Zelatki, in the Nachlas Tzion quarter.
You write emphatically: "Essential point — an important question arises according to the halachah* (see note 7), which is discussed in many responsa*." I am very surprised by this formulation. How could you have written this?
You will excuse me for saying that what you were told is without foundation, that there is not the slightest doubt in this matter. The Talmud* establishes it clearly, in tractate Sukkah* 51b (see note 8), as does the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 124. You should also consult the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, same chapter, paragraph 11.
The responsa* ask whether one can fulfill the obligation in this way for the reading of the Megillah* (see note 9), or refer to one who is in another location (see note 10). And even in the latter case, many opinions permit this practice. On this matter, those of Hungarian origin have modified their usual approach, since they are among those who permit (see note 11), whereas the Sefardim forbid it — but this point will not be elaborated here.
In any case, it is clear that a microphone is not less than a waved cloth (see note 12), as stated in the tractate Sukkah* cited above.

(8) Which states that one may answer Amen* even if one does not hear the voice of the prayer leader.
(9) One cannot fulfill the mitzvah* by listening to it through a microphone.
