Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter of 8 Sivan. You ask me about your state of health and inform me of the doctors' opinion regarding the removal of your tonsils.

In such a case, one defers to the opinion of two specialists in this field. Then the statement of our Sages is fulfilled: "The Torah* has authorized the physician to heal." It is, indeed, a Torah of life, including in the literal sense, here below, in this world (see note 1).

I read what you say about the value of your pedagogical mission with a surprise mixed with pain. Between the lines, one can observe discouragement. I speak of surprise because, if one reflects — even briefly — on the history of Israel, particularly during these recent years, one observes that undertakings which, in people's opinion, were doomed to failure — especially by comparison with other achievements — have met with great success, as practice has shown.

In this matter, success was achieved because one acted in a disinterested manner, with sincerity and wholeheartedness. In our day, each of us who lives here below proves the Providence of the Creator of the world over everything within it (see note 2).

I have already explained all of this elsewhere in detail. The great master, the Rambam*, states that all of a person's life is based on the precept: "In all your ways, acknowledge Him," as he explains at length, particularly in chapter 3 of his Laws of Character Traits. And the person who reflects on all this will be led along these paths, in the manner just described and with joy.

Sometimes, upon making an assessment, one arrives at a conclusion of failure, one tells oneself that success is impossible. From that point on, actions in this direction will be weakened. It is quite clear that this is a stratagem of the evil inclination, described as "foolish" (see note 3).

I have good hope that these few lines will suffice for you to reflect sincerely on all this and to redouble your ardor regarding Yiddishkeit* in general and proper education in particular, with joy.

With my blessing for good news,

Notes

(1) It therefore infuses life into one who puts its precepts into practice.

(2) Having survived the massacres of the World War.

(3) The evil inclination is called "the old and foolish king."
