To the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yehoshua Schneur Zalman (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 9 Sivan. You tell me that you are seeking a secretary for the Yeshivah*, capable of handling secretarial work and financial matters. This is very wise, and such an expenditure (see note 2) will in fact be an investment. Moreover, the development of the Yeshivah* makes this recruitment indispensable.

You also speak of a girls' school. In my opinion, this is necessary as well, as I have written several times (see note 3). To convince the families and those who have reservations, I will take upon myself — without making a vow — the salary of the teachers and the director for the first two months of operation.

During these two months, you will surely be able to secure the financial coverage (see note 4). Obviously, you may make all of this known publicly (see note 5), but it is necessary to take counsel and consult to determine the most propitious moment for this communication, so that it will be most effective.

Obviously, the manner of making this announcement also has an impact. One can take advantage of it to create, in a sense, a competition (see note 6). People will see that the budget for the first two months is being sent from here, and they will then commit to a certain amount.

I am surprised that you do not tell me how you took advantage of the days of the time of the Giving of our Torah* (see note 7). No doubt you will specify this for me at the next opportunity.

במענה על מכתבו מט' סיון, נכון במאד מה שכותב שמחפש מזכיר להישיבה מתאים לעניני המזכירות ולענינים של כספים וכו' והוצאה בכגון דא הכנסה היא, ובפרט שמוכרח הוא בהתאם עם התפתחות הישיבה.

ובמ"ש אודות בי"ס לנערות, גם זה לדעתי מוכרח הוא וכמ"ש כמה פעמים, ובכדי לפצות דעת הבע"ב והחוששים וכו', הנה - בל"נ - אסלק המשכורת של המורים, מנהל וכיו"ב, דשני חדשים הראשונים דבית הספר זה, ובודאי במשך שני חדשים יוכלו לבסס מעמד הכספי, ומובן שיכול לפרסם זה, אלא שצריך להתיישב ולהתייעץ מתי העת המוכשרה לפרסום ענין זה בכדי שתהי' התועלת גדולה ככל האפשרי, ומובן שגם אופן הפרסום יכול לסייע בזה, היינו שיעשו מעין התחרות, שכיון שיראו שמכאן מספיקים ההוצאה לשני חדשים הראשונים, הרי פב"פ יקח על עצמו סכום כך וכך וכו'.

לפלא שאין כותב איך ניצלו ימי זמן מ"ת, ובטח גם עד"ז ימלא בהזדמנות הכי קרובה.
