To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Alexander Zysel (see note 1),
Greetings and blessings,
I have heard much about you and your activities, particularly in the educational domain, and therefore the receipt of your letter itself caused me pleasure. You describe briefly what you have experienced and the manner in which you are currently settled.
I am, however, surprised and somewhat pained by the content of this letter and especially by its spirit, permeated with sadness or even a still stronger feeling. I write that I am surprised and I explain myself. Divine Providence has placed you in a ray of light, since the opportunity has been granted to you to devote yourself to the education of Jews. This is indeed proof that you possess the necessary strength to carry out this primary mission.
It is said that "the Holy One, blessed be He, does not act carelessly toward His creatures." Everything therefore depends on you. If you truly and strongly desire it, it is certain that you will overcome the difficulties and obstacles, as well as the veils and hindrances.
Even if you are sad because, for the moment, you have not succeeded in improving this education as would be necessary, you know the explanation of the Tanya* and of various works, according to which sadness must be systematically avoided — moreover, that it is harmful. Furthermore, our holy master says that "one concrete action is preferable to a thousand complaints."
Moreover, it is human nature that when one heaves a sigh, one derives from it a bit of satisfaction, observing that one is preoccupied in this manner. But this state does not bring the ardor that leads to action, which would make it possible to fill the lack.
Of course, my purpose is by no means to give you a lecture. I wish, more precisely, to express to you my clear and definitive opinion, which is as follows. You engage in educational activity, and this constitutes a considerable merit that is not given to everyone, especially in our era. Certainly, as is the case with everything concerning Torah* and mitzvos*, Hashem provides the means and the necessary strength. He further issues the injunction: "And you shall choose life." But ultimately, the person must make the choice of his own free will, through his free choice.
It is said of all those who were within the walls of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* that "the Chassidic slice of bread they consumed there will never be lost," which Heaven forbid. And the lack of action must therefore spur you and suggest dissatisfaction. From time to time, you are strengthened and encouraged through hints. Sometimes, you are even shown all of this explicitly.
Without a doubt, if you reflect on what has happened recently, you will discover these teachings and these hints. I hope that at least partially, this has given rise to concrete actions, which you will multiply more and more.
You are surely aware of the content of the two telegrams (see note 2) that I addressed to the residents of Kfar Chabad*, in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt by our righteous Moshiach*, speedily and in our days, Amen. Their content is addressed to all the Chassidim* and, more broadly, to all who fear the word of Hashem. It is clear that it concerns, in particular, the former students of the Yeshivah* and those who have made it their occupation (see note 3).
I have good hope that you will make your contribution to strengthening Kfar Chabad* and the institutions located there, quantitatively and qualitatively, to the full extent of your means and even beyond them. I would be happy to receive good news from you in this area as well.
It follows from all of this, regarding yourself personally and the conclusion of your letter, that you are indeed in a ray of light. You have the opportunity to illuminate Jewish souls. Now, "the candle of Hashem is the soul of man," and you can therefore bring to some Jews the Chassidic* light and warmth.
You say that you are imposing upon me the effort of reading your letter. The opposite is true. And I am sure that in your next letters, the sadness will diminish more and more, the joy will intensify — the joy of the mitzvah* that consists of bringing the hearts of the people of Israel closer to our Father Who is in Heaven.
With my blessing that you bring good news of all this, soon,
