Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter from Sunday, in which you tell me that a young man is attracted to Chassidus*, but his parents are not pleased with this and sometimes even obstruct him. You ask me what to do.
I am surprised that you have any doubt on this matter, for it is a decided halachah* in the Shulchan Aruch*, Yoreh Deah*, chapter 240, paragraph 25. Even if this obstruction places him in a situation of danger, even if the father does not prevent him from studying Torah* in general but only a specific part of it, it is stated, in the laws of honoring one's parents, that it is not necessary to listen to him. You will consult this text. How much more is this the case when all study is prevented, and it is quite obvious that the reasons cited at that reference do not apply to his case.
You ask me how to accomplish all of this and whether it must be done "with a strong hand." I do not understand what that would accomplish. The study of Torah* is not a means of defeating the other, Heaven forbid. How much more so is this the case with the luminary of Torah*, which is the tree of life and belongs solely to the domain of holiness.
The Raya Mehemna* explains all of this at length, in Parshas Nasso*, as does the Tanya* of the Alter Rebbe*, in Igeres HaKodesh*, chapter 26. Regarding the program of study for this young man and the place where this study will take place, you will consult the elderly Chassidim* of the holy city of Yerushalayim*. You will present the situation to them in all its details.
You ask me whether you yourself should continue your studies in the place where you currently find yourself or join the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* of Lod. This also depends on certain details and details of details. You will therefore present all of this to the elderly Chassidim* and they will guide you.
You and your friends surely know of the three studies, applicable to everyone, that were instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. These concern the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*, and are well known. No doubt you already observe them or, at the very least, you will do so in the future.
Hashem will grant you success.
With my blessing,
For the Rebbe shlita*,
the secretary,
