Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the 18th day of the third month (see note 1), in which you ask me what your wife should do.

Our Torah*, Torah* of life, has already answered this question, for it enunciates three essential mitzvos* whose initials form the word HaChen* — grace (see note 2), all three entrusted to women. There are, furthermore, all the mitzvos* that they are obligated to observe, as specified in the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, in his Laws of Torah* Study, at the end of chapter 1. And you also know the explanation that our Sages give of the verse: "The honor of the King's daughter is within." Modest conduct, covering the head, enables one to have sons... (see note 3).

You speak of how you will settle in the future. It is clear that all those who can strengthen Yiddishkeit*, disseminate it in your city, among its residents, must do so to the fullest extent possible. The same is true, of course, for the other mitzvos* of the Torah*, especially the one that consists of saving Jewish souls so that they attain the World to Come. This mitzvah* increases the blessing of Hashem and the success He grants to those who put it into practice. It brings them children, health, and material prosperity.

It is therefore quite clear that you and your wife, inasmuch as Hashem has granted you the capacity to act with eagerness in this domain, among your brethren in your city, must do so with the greatest eagerness.

I am surprised that you tell me nothing of your study of Chassidus*, in addition to the revealed dimension of Torah* and the three studies applicable to everyone, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*. The latter concern the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*, and are well known.

With my blessing for good news of all this,

במענה על מכתבו מח"י לירחא תליתאי, בו שואל מה על זוגתו תחי' לעשות.

- וכבר מלתו אמורה בתורתנו הק' תורת חיים, והוא בשלשת המצות העיקריות "הח"ן" שניתנו לנשים ובכל המצות שמחויבים בהם, וכמפורט בשו"ע לרבנו הזקן הלכות ת"ת סוף פרק א', וכבר נודע דרז"ל על הפסוק כל כבודה בת מלך פנימה, שעל ידי הנהגה בצניעות כיסוי הראש זוכים לבנים וכו'.

ובמ"ש אודות הסתדרותו בעתיד, מובן שכאו"א שיכול להשפיע בהחזקת היהדות והפצתה ב... ובפרט מתושבי... צריך לעשות בזה ככל יכולתו, ובודאי שככל שאר מצות התורה, ובפרט בהצלת נפשות מישראל לחיי העוה"ב מוסיפים בברכת השי"ת והצלחתו להמתעסקים בזה בבני חיי ומזוני רוויחא, וע"פ זה פשוט שעליו ועל זוגתו שיחיו, כיון שחוננו השי"ת בכשרון לחנוך לפעול בכל המרץ בשטח זה בין אחיו אשר ב... במרץ הכי גדול.

לפלא שאין מזכיר משיעורי לימוד שלו בתורת החסידות נוסף על שיעוריו בלימוד הנגלה, ונוסף על שלשת השיעורים השוים לכל נפש מתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים.
